It’s official: the iPhone 16 lineup comes with 8GB of RAM, and yes, that’s across the board—from the base model all the way up to the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This news, straight from Apple’s own Johny Srouji, the company’s VP of hardware tech, adds a bit more context to what makes the new iPhones tick.

In an interview with Geekerwan (spotted by 9to5Mac), Srouji gave a rare glimpse behind the curtain, explaining how Apple Intelligence played a big role in this RAM boost. “DRAM is one aspect,” he said when discussing how they decide on hardware features, “and it led us to believe we need to get to 8GB.” According to Srouji, the extra RAM will also be a game-changer for high-end gaming and other intensive tasks that people increasingly rely on their iPhones for.

What’s interesting is that Apple hadn’t officially mentioned how much RAM the iPhone 16 series would have until now. But some eagle-eyed developers over at MacRumors spotted clues in Xcode, Apple’s development tool, shortly after the iPhone 16’s reveal.

Now, it’s worth noting that this upgrade doesn’t just make your everyday tasks smoother—it’s also about future-proofing your device for Apple Intelligence. The AI-driven feature set is expected to debut with iOS 18, but here’s the catch: it won’t be available on the iPhone 15 series, which only has 6GB of RAM. The only exception in that lineup? The iPhone 15 Pro (and 15 Pro Max), which will support the new feature thanks to its beefier internals.

Beyond the RAM talk, Srouji’s 17-minute interview dives into some juicy details about the A18 chip’s performance, the company’s unique approach to thermal management, and the magic behind the iPhone 16’s video and image processing. It’s a fascinating look at the philosophy driving Apple’s hardware decisions.

So, what does this mean for you? In short, the iPhone 16 lineup is built to handle whatever you throw at it—whether that’s intensive gaming, multi-tasking, or just keeping pace with the future of Apple’s AI features. And with 8GB of RAM, you’re getting a phone that’s not just fast today but prepared for what’s next.
