Apple has quietly picked up another piece of technology that sounds like it escaped from a science-fiction movie.
The company has acquired Sonera, a Berkeley-based startup developing tiny magnetic sensors designed to detect signals produced by the human body. The deal surfaced through European Union regulatory filings rather than an Apple announcement, which is pretty much the Apple acquisition playbook at this point.
And while “magnetic sensors that can read brain activity” sounds like the setup for an Apple TV thriller, the underlying technology is very real.
Apple quietly adds Sonera’s sensing technology
Apple is famously reluctant to talk about the smaller companies it acquires, so the Sonera deal only became public because of Apple’s obligations under the EU’s Digital Markets Act. A filing made in May 2026 disclosed that Apple would acquire certain Sonera assets and hire some of its employees. The financial terms were not disclosed.

Sonera was founded in 2018 and emerged from stealth in 2023 after raising $11 million in seed funding, bringing its total funding to about $20 million at the time. Its focus has been developing a different way of sensing activity inside the human body without relying on conventional electrical sensors.
The company’s core idea is surprisingly simple to describe, even if the engineering behind it is anything but: instead of measuring electrical signals directly through contact with the skin, Sonera’s technology detects the magnetic fields generated by electrical activity in the body.
That opens the door to something particularly interesting for Apple.
The S1 chip is where things get really interesting
Sonera’s S1 is a chip designed for magnetic muscle sensing. The company has described it as a way to bring this type of sensing into much smaller devices, including wearables.
Sonera’s own research has explored using magnetic muscle sensing for gesture recognition and human-computer interaction. Its 2024 work specifically pointed to possible applications in smartwatches, smart glasses and earbuds, including gesture control and even interfaces based on facial muscle movement or subvocal speech.
That’s a potentially big deal for Apple because the company already has a pretty impressive collection of wearable hardware. An Apple Watch, AirPods or future smart glasses could theoretically become much more capable at understanding subtle movements from the person wearing them without requiring traditional touch controls.
There are medical and accessibility possibilities, too. Sonera has previously identified applications including prosthetic control, monitoring neuromuscular conditions, finding disease biomarkers and tracking athletic performance. A U.S. government research award also described its S1 as a lightweight, low-power, contactless chip for muscle sensing.
But can it really read your thoughts?
This is where the story needs a little reality check.
Sonera’s technology is associated with measuring magnetic signals generated by neural activity, and the company’s stated ambition has been to make brain activity easier to measure. But that doesn’t mean Apple has suddenly acquired a chip that can sit inside an Apple Watch and read your thoughts like a futuristic mind reader.
Sonera’s initial S1 work has focused on muscle sensing, which is a much more practical near-term application. Its research has explored how magnetic signals can capture neuromuscular activity and potentially translate movements or silent speech into computer input.
That’s still remarkably futuristic. And unlike an implanted brain-computer interface, the attraction here is that the sensing can be performed externally.
Apple has already explored accessibility and alternative input methods across its hardware, while Vision Pro has demonstrated how far the company is willing to push hands-free interaction. Sonera’s technology could eventually give Apple another way to understand what a user is doing without requiring them to physically touch a screen or button.
But that’s speculation for now. Apple hasn’t said what it plans to do with Sonera’s technology, and there’s no announced Apple product using it.
Why Apple might be interested
The acquisition fits neatly with Apple’s broader push toward health, wearables and more natural forms of computing.
Apple Watch has gradually moved beyond being a smartwatch into a health-monitoring platform, while AirPods and Vision Pro are giving Apple additional hardware through which it can collect signals and interpret how people interact with technology.
A sensor capable of detecting subtle muscle or neural activity could eventually add another layer to that ecosystem. Imagine controlling an interface with tiny hand movements, interacting with glasses without reaching for a screen, or using subtle muscle signals as an accessibility input.
That’s the long-term possibility, not a promise of what Apple is building today.
And that may be the most interesting part of the acquisition. Apple isn’t necessarily buying a finished product. It’s buying technology that could give its future devices an entirely new sense.
For now, though, don’t expect an Apple Watch to start reading your mind. We’re apparently not quite there yet.
But Apple buying a company whose technology aims to make neural data easier to sense? That’s certainly a fascinating glimpse at where the company’s wearable ambitions could eventually go.
