Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, bringing a hefty collection of upgrades to its highest-end smartphones. The new Pro models focus heavily on camera control, sustained performance, battery life and on-device AI, with Apple’s new A20 Pro chip sitting at the center of it all.
And yes, Apple has found yet another way to make the iPhone sound like it needs its own tiny production studio.
The iPhone 18 Pro lineup introduces a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, giving users something iPhones have never offered before: actual control over the lens aperture. Apple is also pairing the new camera system with expanded manual controls, a redesigned Dynamic Island and a next-generation vapor chamber designed to keep the phones running hard for longer.
The two models will be available in black, silver, glacier and a new burgundy finish. Storage options range from 256GB all the way up to 2TB.
A20 Pro brings 2nm silicon to the iPhone
The biggest performance story is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip.
Built using 2nm process technology, A20 Pro features a six-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, alongside a seven-core GPU with integrated Neural Accelerators. Apple says the GPU can be up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro, while memory bandwidth increases by 50 percent.
The bigger change, however, is on the AI side.
A20 Pro includes a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, giving the chip 32 Neural Engine cores in total. Apple says that effectively doubles the AI processing power compared with the A19 Pro, allowing the iPhone 18 Pro models to handle more demanding on-device AI workloads and computational photography.
That extra horsepower should also be useful for gaming and other sustained workloads. Apple is clearly positioning the A20 Pro as more than just another annual chip upgrade; the company wants it to be the foundation for increasingly AI-heavy iPhone features.
Apple finally gives the main camera a variable aperture
The camera system gets perhaps the most interesting hardware upgrade.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max feature a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with a variable aperture. Six laser-cut blades can move between four aperture settings, allowing the camera to automatically or manually adjust how much light enters the lens.
The aperture can open as wide as ƒ/1.48 for low-light photography, use ƒ/1.8 for portraits and narrow down to ƒ/4 when users want greater depth of field.
In practical terms, that means the iPhone can now make a more meaningful optical decision depending on the scene rather than relying entirely on computational photography to do the heavy lifting.
Apple says the new system should improve low-light photography, preserve more detail in group photos and give photographers greater control over depth of field.
The Camera app also gets a new Pro controls interface. Users can manually adjust aperture, shutter speed and white balance, while a histogram provides additional exposure information.
For people who have been asking Apple for more camera controls, this is probably the part of the iPhone 18 Pro that will get the most attention.
The camera system also gets upgraded Photographic Styles with new texture and grain controls. Apple is adding more video flexibility as well, including the ability to apply Cinematic effects after recording at up to 60fps and capture 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse footage.
Apple wants you to know which photos are real
Apple is also taking aim at the increasingly messy world of AI-generated and heavily edited images.
The iPhone 18 Pro introduces Apple Reference Image, a feature that uses the new Main camera sensor to sign the pixels captured by the sensor. A reference image can then be generated through Private Cloud Compute and viewed alongside the normal photograph in the Photos app.
The idea is essentially to create a digital reference showing what the camera actually captured, giving users a way to compare an original reference with an edited image.

Apple is also adding support around image metadata and the SynthID standard to help identify images that have been generated or modified using AI.
It is a particularly timely feature as smartphones become increasingly capable of generating, modifying and enhancing images without the user ever needing to open a traditional editing application.
The Dynamic Island gets smaller — and busier
Apple isn’t getting rid of the Dynamic Island just yet.
Instead, the company has redesigned it to take up less space while making it capable of displaying more information. The updated Dynamic Island can now show up to three Live Activities simultaneously.
Face ID remains integrated into the system for unlocking the phone, authenticating purchases and signing into apps.
So, essentially, the Dynamic Island is getting smaller while becoming even more determined to stay in your peripheral vision.
A vapor chamber tackles sustained performance
The A20 Pro isn’t working alone.
Apple has redesigned the thermal architecture inside the iPhone 18 Pro models with a new vapor chamber that has three times the surface area of the previous-generation system used in the iPhone 17 Pro.
The company says the new thermal design can enable up to a 40 percent improvement in sustained performance compared with the previous generation.
That’s an important distinction. Peak performance numbers are nice for spec sheets, but sustained performance matters more when you’re gaming, recording video, processing large files or running demanding AI workloads for extended periods.
Apple’s new packaging also takes inspiration from its M-series chips by positioning the silicon die and memory side by side, helping the A20 Pro connect more directly with the vapor chamber.
Battery life gets a major boost
Battery life is another area where Apple is promising a substantial improvement.
The iPhone 18 Pro can deliver up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours on eSIM-only models.
The Pro can charge to 50 percent in around 15 minutes using a wired connection, while wireless charging can reach 50 percent in around 30 minutes.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max gets an especially interesting charging claim: five minutes of wired charging can provide around seven hours of video playback.
Apple says the Pro Max also gets up to 30 hours of usage on a full charge under its new battery usage model.
In other words, Apple has apparently decided that “I need to charge my iPhone” should become slightly less common.
C2 modem and N1 connectivity chips
The iPhone 18 Pro models also feature Apple’s new N1 wireless networking chip, which enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread connectivity.
The phones also introduce Apple’s C2 cellular modem system. Apple says C2 uses AI-powered improvements to enhance cellular quality and reliability, while delivering faster uploads than the previous C1X modem and consuming 15 percent less energy.
C2 also adds mmWave support in the U.S.
The combination of Apple’s own silicon, networking hardware and modem technology continues the company’s broader push toward controlling more of the technologies inside the iPhone rather than relying on external suppliers.
iOS 27 and the new Siri AI
Naturally, the iPhone 18 Pro launches alongside Apple’s next major software push.
Both models run iOS 27 and support the next generation of Apple Intelligence, including the new Siri AI.
Siri AI is rolling out in beta with iOS 27 and is designed to understand personal context across messages, emails, photos and other information. It can also use on-screen awareness to perform actions related to what’s currently displayed on the iPhone.
Apple is also adding a Siri mode to the Camera app, allowing users to ask about things they’re looking at through the camera.
Other Apple Intelligence features include upgraded Clean Up, Spatial Reframing, Extend and a more photorealistic Image Playground.
Safari is also getting Notify Me, which can monitor web pages for changes such as product restocks or price drops.
Apple says these AI features use a combination of on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute to maintain its focus on privacy.
eSIM-only models get an even bigger battery
Apple is continuing to expand its move toward eSIM-only iPhones.
The eSIM-only versions of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be sold in a number of markets, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, Mexico, the UAE and several other countries.
Removing the physical SIM hardware gives Apple additional internal space for a larger battery. Apple says those models get two additional hours of video playback as a result.
India is included among the countries receiving the new iPhone 18 Pro models, although Apple’s eSIM-only market list does not include India.
Price and availability
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the U.S. for 256GB of storage, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 for 256GB.
Both models are also available with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB of storage.
Preorders begin September 12 at 5 am PT, with availability starting September 18 in more than 65 countries and regions, including the U.S. and India.
The new iPhone 18 Pro lineup therefore isn’t a minor spec refresh. Apple is attacking several areas at once: camera hardware, AI processing, thermal performance, battery life, connectivity and software.
The A20 Pro may be the headline chip, but the more interesting story is how all of these pieces fit together. Apple is building the iPhone into a device that can run increasingly demanding AI workloads while simultaneously becoming a more capable camera, a longer-lasting gaming machine and, apparently, a slightly more obsessive keeper of your Live Activities.
And with 2TB of storage available, at least Apple is giving all those photos, videos and AI-generated creations somewhere to live.
