Apple has officially discontinued the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, bringing the two flagship phones to the end of their run exactly one year after they were introduced.

The move came on September 9, immediately after Apple announced the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. As is typical for Apple’s Pro lineup, the previous-generation Pro models have now been removed from Apple’s online store and are no longer sold directly by the company.

That means Apple’s current high-end iPhone lineup has officially moved on to the iPhone 18 Pro generation. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the U.S., while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, both $100 more than their respective iPhone 17 Pro predecessors.

The iPhone 17 Pro’s run ends after one year

Apple introduced the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max in September 2025. Both models arrived with Apple’s A19 Pro chip, a redesigned aluminum unibody construction and a triple-camera system built around three 48-megapixel rear cameras.

The lineup also introduced Apple’s 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera and replaced the titanium construction used by the iPhone 16 Pro generation with an aluminum design featuring an Apple-designed vapor chamber for improved thermal performance. The iPhone 17 Pro had a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max featured a 6.9-inch display.

At launch, the iPhone 17 Pro started at $1,099 in the U.S., with the iPhone 17 Pro Max starting at $1,199. Neither model will continue as an official option on Apple’s online store now that their successors have arrived.

This isn’t particularly unusual for Apple. The company generally removes its previous Pro models from its own lineup when their direct successors launch, rather than keeping them around at lower prices alongside the new generation.

The iPhone 18 Pro takes over

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max bring several notable upgrades over the outgoing models.

Apple’s new Pro phones use the A20 Pro chip and introduce a redesigned camera system with a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera featuring variable aperture. Apple says the new camera provides more control over depth of field and improves low-light photography and video. The phones also feature a smaller Dynamic Island and a next-generation vapor chamber designed to support sustained performance.

Battery life has also received a significant boost. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max can deliver up to 43 hours of video playback, with the company calling it the biggest battery-life improvement ever delivered on an iPhone. The new models also support faster wired charging.

The iPhone 18 Pro generation additionally introduces Siri AI alongside Apple’s latest Apple Intelligence features, giving Apple another major reason for customers to move from the previous generation.

Preorders for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max begin September 12, with availability starting September 18 in the U.S. and other launch markets.

You can still find the iPhone 17 Pro elsewhere

Discontinued by Apple doesn’t mean the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max have suddenly vanished.

Third-party retailers can continue selling existing inventory, and that could make the outgoing models more interesting for shoppers looking for a high-end iPhone at a lower price. Retailers may begin discounting remaining stock as they make room for the iPhone 18 Pro generation.

The important distinction is that Apple itself is no longer offering the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max through its online store. Once existing third-party inventory runs out, finding particular storage configurations or colors could become considerably harder.

For buyers who don’t need the latest camera system, A20 Pro chip or Apple’s newest AI features, a discounted iPhone 17 Pro could therefore become an appealing alternative to the more expensive iPhone 18 Pro.

But there’s also a catch: Apple has raised the starting price of the new Pro models. So the gap between a discounted iPhone 17 Pro and an iPhone 18 Pro could ultimately determine whether the older phone becomes a genuine bargain or simply an older flagship that isn’t discounted enough.

For now, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max have officially moved into Apple’s previous-generation lineup, while the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max take over as the company’s flagship Pro phones.
