Apple March event: new iPads and M3 MacBooks

Apple fans, mark your calendars. According to rumors, the tech giant is expected to host a product launch event in mid to late March 2024. If the leaks are true, we can expect to see some highly anticipated updates across both the iPad and MacBook lineups.

While Apple’s fall events get more fanfare for introducing new iPhones, the company has a tradition of early spring launches as well. Though more sporadic, these have brought major reveals over the years – think new desktops like the Mac Studio or tablets like the third-gen iPhone SE.

So what’s allegedly on tap for Apple’s next keynote? Here’s a rundown of the likely announcements, based on insider reports:

All-new M3 chip MacBook Airs

First up, Apple is poised to unveil 13-inch and 15-inch versions of the super popular MacBook Air powered by the company’s latest silicon: the M3 chip.

This new third-generation proprietary processor debuted just last fall across the MacBook Pro range. In internal testing, Apple saw the M3 deliver up to 30% faster performance cores and 50% faster efficiency cores compared to the already speedy M1.

Don’t expect any radical redesigns for the new Airs, however. Apart from the upgraded internals, external changes appear minimal. With any luck, that also means similar price points to the current models, which start at $1,099 and $1,299 respectively.

OLED comes to iPad Pro

Arguably the biggest potential reveal is the rumored arrival of OLED displays on the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models. This would be the first time Apple brings this display tech to any iPad.

For the uninitiated, OLED (organic light-emitting diode) provides richer colors and contrast by lighting each individual pixel. Expect an even more vibrant, seamless image compared to traditional LCD panels. Leaks also suggest a slimmer design thanks to the displays’ thinner profile.

Going OLED does bump up costs though, so buyers should prepare for a price hike, perhaps around $100-200 more than the latest M2 iPad Pros. Still, for creative pros who want the ultimate tablet screen, it may be worth it.

Jumbo-sized 12.9-inch iPad Air

Last but not least, Apple is said to be prepping an overhauled iPad Air as well, headlined by an all-new 12.9-inch variant – the largest Air ever.

With the fancy new OLED iPads occupying higher premium territory, these updated LCD-based Air tablets would serve as feature-packed but more affordable alternatives.

Rumblings point to the next-gen iPad Air rocking either Apple’s M2 or M3 chip (a step up from the M1 silicon found in the current 2022 model). Pricing is still TBD but may climb slightly from the existing 10.9-inch version, which starts at $599.

The big event approaches…

While Apple has yet to issue formal invitations, insider chatter suggests March 2024 is clearly the target for the company’s next keynote. And given the scale of updates in the pipeline, this could be a spring event that rivals those famed September iPhone unveilings.

Of course with any product launch, delays are possible, so dates aren’t set in stone. But leakers remain confident the bulk will indeed ship out to consumers next month.

So keep your eyes peeled iPad and MacBook fans…if the rumors pan out, exciting new gear is likely just weeks away!
