Apple today unveiled a new iPad Pro with the M2 chip, a hovering Apple Pencil feature, Wi-Fi 6E, and other new features. According to Apple, the new iPad Pro with the M2 chip has up to 15% faster CPU performance and up to 35% faster GPU performance than the previous iPad Pro with the M1 chip. The chip includes a new media engine and image signal processor, allowing users to capture ProRes video for the first time and transcode it up to three times faster.
The second-generation Apple Pencil is now detected up to 12mm above the display on the new iPad Pro, allowing users to see a preview of their drawing before they make it. Text fields expand automatically when the pencil is near the screen in Scribble. The new iPad Pro is the first Apple device to feature Wi-Fi 6E, with download speeds of up to 2.4Gbps advertised by Apple.
According to Apple’s technical specifications, the new iPad Pro models have the same size and weight, display brightness and resolution, and battery life as the previous models. Both models retain a Thunderbolt port, four speakers, Face ID, and a rear Smart Connector. On cellular models, there is still a physical nano-SIM card tray.
The new iPad Pro is now available for purchase on Apple.com and in the Apple Store app in the United States and 27 other countries, with prices starting at $799 for the 11-inch model and $999 for the 12.9-inch model in Space Gray and Silver color option, with storage capacities of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Customer deliveries and in-store availability will begin on Wednesday, October 26.
