Apple rumored to equip all iPhone 17 models with OLED ProMotion screens

ProMotion tech could come to all iPhone 17 models, according to leaks. Here's what the leaks are saying about Apple's next move.

Apple‘s iPhone lineup has typically divided its offerings into different tiers, with the “Pro” models featuring advanced hardware capabilities, including the highly sought-after high-refresh rate OLED displays. However, recent leaks and industry discussions suggest that this separation may soon disappear.

A leak from Digital Chat Station on Weibo, noted by MacRumors, suggests that the entire iPhone 17 series could feature the high-end display technology previously reserved for Pro models. Digital Chat Station has a track record of accurate leaks, including details about the iPhone 15‘s camera sensors and the iPhone 12‘s display panel, which adds a layer of credibility to this rumor. The leak isn’t detailed, merely hinting that the base model iPhone 17 will sport a high refresh rate, which many interpret as the introduction of ProMotion technology across the board.

ProMotion for everyone?

ProMotion, Apple’s term for its adaptive refresh rate technology, allows the screen to adjust from 1Hz to 120Hz based on the content being displayed, enhancing both battery efficiency and visual fluidity. This technology was first introduced with the iPhone 13 Pro models and has since been a hallmark of Apple’s premium offerings. If the leaks are to be believed, Apple is planning to extend this feature to all models in the 2025 iPhone 17 lineup. This move was foreshadowed by reports from MacRumors back in February, which suggested that Apple would deploy LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) panels across all models, facilitating the ProMotion feature.

More than just displays

The shift in display technology isn’t the only anticipated change. Ross Young, a prominent display supply chain analyst, has hinted at further alterations in Apple’s strategy. The rumored iPhone 17 “Slim” is expected to replace the current “Plus” model, potentially bringing ProMotion to what would become a more affordable, yet still feature-rich option in the lineup.

Moreover, Apple might differentiate the models through other hardware enhancements. The iPhone 17 Pro Max could feature a more compact Face ID sensor and a smaller Dynamic Island cutout, alongside increased RAM — 12GB for the Pro models versus 8GB for the standard and Slim variants. This would mark a significant departure from using display technology as the primary differentiator.

Other speculations

Beyond displays, the iPhone 17 series might see an upgrade in camera technology across all models. There’s talk of a universal upgrade to 24MP front-facing cameras, a step up from the current 12MP standard. Additionally, there’s speculation that Apple might integrate its own Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip into all iPhone 17 models, a move that would further reduce reliance on third-party components and potentially enhance performance and integration with Apple’s ecosystem.

What this means for consumers

For consumers, these changes suggest that Apple is aiming to democratize what were once premium features. The availability of ProMotion displays, advanced camera systems, and proprietary chips across the entire lineup could significantly elevate the user experience for all iPhone users, not just those who opt for the more expensive Pro models. This strategy could also be seen as Apple’s response to a market where competitors are increasingly offering high-end features at lower price points.

Looking ahead

While these rumors provide an exciting glimpse into Apple’s potential plans, it’s worth noting that leaks can sometimes diverge from final product decisions. Nonetheless, the direction Apple seems to be heading with the iPhone 17 series — if these leaks hold true — indicates a focus on enhancing the baseline experience for all its users, potentially reshaping expectations around what a non-Pro iPhone can offer.
