Apple iPhone Duo is here with a 7.6-inch foldable display

Remember Surface Duo? Apple apparently remembers it too.

Apple has finally folded.

After years of watching other phone makers turn smartphones into tiny tablets, Apple has unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone. And while the device looks unmistakably like a modern Apple product, its name has accidentally summoned a very specific ghost from Microsoft’s hardware department.

Meet the Surface Duo-mini.

Okay, technically, Apple calls it the iPhone Duo. But once you see a phone that opens into two screens while carrying the word “Duo” in its name, it becomes extremely difficult not to think about Microsoft’s 2020 experiment with a two-screen Android phone.

The original Surface Duo was introduced as Microsoft’s answer to mobile productivity, combining two separate displays connected by a 360-degree hinge. Microsoft pitched it as a device that could let users work across two screens, run apps side by side, read like a book, and generally pretend their phone had suddenly enrolled in a productivity seminar. It launched in 2020 starting at $1,399.

Apple’s iPhone Duo takes that basic “phone that becomes a bigger thing” idea and, naturally, gives it an enormous dose of Apple.

Unlike the Surface Duo’s two-panel design, iPhone Duo has a continuous foldable inner display. Open it up and there’s a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR screen, making it Apple’s largest iPhone display yet. Close it, and a 5.4-inch outer display handles normal phone duties. Apple says the inner screen is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, while the outer display provides 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro.

So yes, Apple has effectively created an iPhone that can go from “normal phone” to “why is your phone suddenly the size of a small tablet?”

And unlike the Surface Duo, there isn’t a giant physical gap down the middle of the experience. Apple has designed the two displays around the same aspect ratio, allowing content to scale proportionally as the device opens and closes. The inner display also gets a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and make the crease less noticeable.

That hinge is doing considerably more than simply keeping the two halves attached. Apple says it contains more than 100 components and is designed to support the center of the display when the phone is opened flat. Magnets help provide what Apple describes as a satisfying and secure closure.

Because apparently even the act of folding an iPhone needs to feel premium.

The entire thing is wrapped in Grade 5 titanium, with a mirror-polished finish, Ceramic Shield protection and an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. Apple also says the inner display uses a custom polymer cover layer and additional structural materials designed to improve durability.

Underneath all that folding hardware is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple has paired it with a custom vapor chamber and a dual-battery architecture to deal with the extra thermal and power demands of the larger device.

The company claims iPhone Duo can deliver up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. Battery life is rated at up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display, up to 44 hours using the outer display, and up to 24 hours when both displays are used equally.

The camera system is also considerably more sophisticated than the “two screens, one hinge” gimmick might suggest.

iPhone Duo gets a 48MP Fusion Main camera with optical-quality 2x Telephoto capability, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera and a Center Stage front camera. The folding design also enables some unusual camera tricks, including using the outer display as a preview while taking a selfie with the rear cameras.

There’s even a feature called Kid Cue that puts Peanuts animations on the outer display to get children to look toward the camera.

Because apparently toddlers were the final unsolved problem in computational photography.

Apple has also reworked iOS 27 specifically for the foldable form factor. When the phone is opened, apps can occupy different sides of the display, and Apple’s new Split View lets users run two apps side by side. You can also open two windows of the same app, such as Safari, which could be handy when comparing products, researching something or doing the traditional “buying something I absolutely don’t need at 2 am” routine.

StandBy gets a makeover too, allowing the unfolded iPhone Duo to function as a larger information hub, clock, photo frame or widget display.

And then there’s Apple Intelligence, because no 2026 Apple product announcement would be complete without AI appearing somewhere in the room.

iPhone Duo gets Apple’s newer Siri AI experience, along with features that can use personal context and on-screen awareness. Apple says Siri can work with information across apps and even take action based on what’s displayed on the screen.

The iPhone Duo will also support Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year, which means Apple has officially reached the stage where its phone can accept a stylus.

At this rate, the next iPhone accessory is going to be a tiny desk.

There is, of course, one detail that makes the iPhone Duo considerably less Surface Duo-like: the price.

Apple is asking $1,999 for the iPhone Duo in the U.S. The phone comes with 256GB of storage at the entry level, with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB options available. Apple will offer it in Star White and Night Sky. Preorders open October 16, with availability beginning October 23.

For comparison, Microsoft’s original Surface Duo started at $1,399 in 2020 and opened into an 8.1-inch combined display using two separate PixelSense Fusion screens. Microsoft marketed it heavily around multitasking, including running two apps side by side, reading like a book and using different screen positions for different tasks.

So, yes, the family resemblance is mostly conceptual rather than literal.

Microsoft arrived in 2020 with a phone called Surface Duo that opened into two screens.

Apple arrives in 2026 with a phone called iPhone Duo that opens into one big foldable screen.

Microsoft: “Two screens!”

Apple: “One screen, but make it fold.”

Microsoft: “We have a 360-degree hinge.”

Apple: “We have a titanium hinge with more than 100 components.”

Microsoft: “$1,399.”

Apple: “$1,999.”

And somewhere in Redmond, an old Surface Duo is quietly sitting in a drawer, wondering why it suddenly feels relevant again.

Jokes aside, iPhone Duo represents a major change for Apple’s smartphone lineup. Apple isn’t merely adding a foldable model to the existing iPhone family; it’s redesigning iOS, the camera experience, multitasking and even StandBy around a device that changes physical shape.

The Surface Duo comparison is therefore mostly a fun bit of hardware déjà vu. Microsoft’s original device really was a two-screen productivity experiment, and Microsoft spent considerable effort building software patterns around its unusual form factor.

Apple’s approach is fundamentally different: instead of putting two conventional phone displays next to each other, it has built a single foldable experience that transforms from a pocketable 5.4-inch phone into a 7.6-inch canvas.

Still, “iPhone Duo” was probably the one name Apple could have chosen that would make every former Surface Duo owner sit upright for a second.

And now, six years after Microsoft made the Duo a thing, Apple has decided that the Duo needed an iPhone.

Fair enough.

The Surface Duo walked so the iPhone Duo could fold.
