The Apple AirTag, introduced in April 2021, has become a go-to for iPhone users to track everyday items like keys, wallets, and luggage. Despite its success, Apple hasn’t updated the AirTag since its release. That may change soon, with reports indicating a refreshed version could hit the market in mid-2025.

What we know so far

According to reliable sources like Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the second-generation AirTag is in the works. It is expected to feature a second-generation Ultra-Wideband (UWB) chip, first seen in the iPhone 15 lineup. This chip promises better range and more precise tracking, addressing a key user demand. The built-in speaker could also see design tweaks, aimed at making it harder to remove—a step to prevent misuse in stalking cases.

Integration with Apple’s Vision Pro headset is another rumored feature, though details on this remain sparse. This could suggest a more advanced ecosystem for spatial computing and item tracking in mixed-reality environments.

Interestingly, despite these updates, the overall design is expected to remain similar to the original AirTag. This means you may still need to purchase accessories like keyring holders to attach the device to your belongings.

Why the delay?

The second-generation AirTag’s production timeline has shifted multiple times. Originally rumored for late 2024, mass production is now slated for 2025, possibly due to Apple clearing existing inventory. Reports suggest stockpiles of first-gen AirTags are still abundant, leading to discounts on the current model during sales events like Prime Day and Black Friday.

Should you wait?

If the potential for better range, integration with Vision Pro, and anti-stalking measures appeals to you, waiting for the new model might be worth it. However, the first-gen AirTag is still a strong performer and is currently available at discounted rates (as well as a 4-pack version as of Nov. 18th)—a solid choice if you’re not looking to hold out another year.

For now, Apple seems set to bring new life to the AirTag lineup with advanced features, ensuring it stays competitive in a market where smart trackers are becoming indispensable. The upcoming updates could make the device an even more seamless part of Apple’s expanding ecosystem.
