Apple‘s iconic Mac mini is set for a significant overhaul, according to a recent report by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. The upcoming redesign will not only feature a fresh look but also a notable change in its port selection.

One of the most striking changes in the new Mac mini is the elimination of USB-A ports. This marks a departure from previous models, which typically included a mix of USB-A and USB-C ports. The new design will instead feature exclusively USB-C ports, aligning it more closely with Apple’s other recent products.

The redesigned Mac mini will boast a total of five USB-C ports, distributed between the front and back of the device. This increased number of USB-C ports will provide more flexibility for connecting various peripherals, such as external drives, displays, and other devices. Despite the removal of USB-A, the Mac mini will continue to offer essential ports like Ethernet, HDMI, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

In addition to the port changes, the new Mac mini will also feature a more compact design. Gurman reports that the device will be roughly the size of an Apple TV, though it may be slightly taller than the current model. This smaller footprint could make it more appealing to users with limited desk space.

The redesigned Mac mini will be powered by Apple’s upcoming M4 and M4 Pro chips. These chips are expected to offer significant performance improvements over their predecessors, making the Mac mini a more capable machine for demanding tasks. Apple’s decision to use the same chip generation across all of its Macs is a strategic move that could simplify the product lineup and streamline development efforts.

According to Gurman, the new Mac mini models with the M4 chip are scheduled to begin shipping in early September. The M4 Pro model will follow in October. As the release date approaches, we can expect to learn more about the specific features, pricing, and availability of this exciting new product.
