Back in early 1994, Amazon started as a humble online bookstore, but fast forward to today, and it’s transformed into an e-commerce titan. From books to housewares, electronics to fashion, Amazon has conquered nearly every product category imaginable.

What is Amazon Fresh?

Amazon Fresh is Amazon’s way of taking the hassle out of your grocery shopping. It’s an online grocery pickup and delivery service currently available in almost two dozen US cities and some international spots. The beauty of it is that you can order your groceries online through the Amazon Fresh website or mobile app, and they’ll be delivered right to your doorstep. Alternatively, you can swing by an Amazon Fresh store and pick up your pre-ordered items.

When it comes to what’s on offer, Amazon Fresh pretty much has you covered for all your grocery needs. Think fresh produce, deli meats, canned goods, and even ready-made meals. The specific items available might vary depending on where you are, but you can also find some products from Whole Foods Market, and the rest comes from local Amazon warehouses.

How to get Amazon Fresh

First things first, to access Amazon Fresh, you need to be an Amazon Prime member. Currently, Amazon Fresh is open to Prime members in cities like Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Seattle, among others. Now, here’s the deal: Amazon Prime membership costs $14.99 per month or $139 annually. But before you commit, you can test the waters with a 30-day free trial. If you’re a student, you’re in luck because you can get Prime at half the price, paying just $7.49 monthly or $69 annually, plus you’ll enjoy a generous 6-month free trial. And if you qualify for government assistance, Prime membership is available at just $6.99 per month, also with a 30-day free trial.

The Costs of Amazon Fresh

Apart from your Prime subscription, there’s no additional fee for using Amazon Fresh itself. It’s a free service. However, depending on the total cost of your groceries, you might encounter a delivery fee. Orders below $35 may incur a variable delivery fee of up to $10, while orders of $35 or more enjoy free delivery. Bear in mind that the specific rules can vary by location, so check your local details.

Update Jan. 27, 2023: Under the new policy, the company said delivery charges will be $3.95 for orders between $100-$150, $6.95 for orders of $50 to $100, and $9.95 for orders under $50. Amazon Fresh deliveries over $150 will remain free.

How Does Amazon Fresh Work?

To dive into the world of Amazon Fresh, you’ll need an active Amazon account and reside in one of the serviced areas. Simply enter your zip code on the Amazon Fresh website (www.amazon.com/fresh) to confirm your eligibility. Once you’re in, ensure you have an Amazon Prime membership, granting you access to a world of perks, including free same-day and one-day delivery on eligible items and exclusive deals.

As a Prime member in an Amazon Fresh-ready area, you can browse through a diverse range of products on the Amazon Fresh website or app. Shopping is a breeze, with categories, a search bar, and even Alexa to help you find what you need.

After you’ve loaded up your cart, it’s time to pick a 2-hour delivery window that suits you. Amazon Fresh offers both doorstep delivery and pickup options, with same-day service available. You can also choose between attended or unattended delivery. The former requires someone to be there to receive your order, while the latter uses temperature-controlled bags to keep your groceries fresh if you’re not home.

Much like Amazon’s Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), Amazon Fresh relies on Amazon’s network of warehouses for storage and order fulfillment. To speed things up, Amazon has also partnered with third-party grocery stores in various areas.

If you prefer to do your shopping in person, you can visit a physical Amazon Fresh store. These stores usually have everything you find online, plus they boast Amazon’s ‘just walk out’ technology. No more dealing with cashiers — just use the Amazon app to tally up your purchases, and it’s all linked to your Amazon account.

Verdict

Amazon Fresh is a step forward in making grocery shopping more convenient, blending the best of Whole Foods’ offerings with Amazon’s tech-savvy approach. However, it’s not without its quirks. Prices for certain items might be higher than what you’d find in traditional grocery stores, and the service’s availability is still limited in terms of locations.
