Ring is rolling out a new encryption system called TAKE—short for “Throw Away the Key Encryption”—that the Amazon-owned company says will give customers stronger privacy by default without forcing them to give up popular smart features like person detection, package alerts, and AI-powered video search.
The update, announced this week, marks one of the most significant shifts in Ring’s security posture since the company first introduced optional end-to-end encryption (E2EE) a few years ago. Instead of asking users to choose between privacy and features, Ring is betting that TAKE can offer a middle ground: robust encryption that still allows cloud-based intelligence to work smoothly.
What TAKE actually does
At a high level, TAKE treats your Ring videos like they’re locked in a vault that only you hold the keys to—except for brief, controlled moments when Ring needs temporary access to power features you’ve turned on.

On the positive side, security-focused outlets note that TAKE is a clear upgrade from Ring’s previous default setup, limiting the company’s standing access to footage and forcing it to justify each decryption event with an active feature request.
