Walmart+ Assist for SNAP, WIC, Medicaid: what you need to know

If you receive SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, or similar support, Walmart+ Assist could lower your grocery and fuel costs without changing your benefits.

Walmart+ Assist is a discounted version of Walmart’s paid membership for people who receive qualifying government assistance. It gives eligible U.S. shoppers the full Walmart+ package at 50% off: $6.47 per month or $49 per year, rather than the standard membership price.

The idea is simple. Walmart+ can save money and time, especially for households that regularly order groceries, prescriptions, or everyday essentials. But the membership fee itself can be another recurring expense. Walmart+ Assist lowers that entry cost for customers enrolled in programs such as SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the National School Lunch Program, and LIHEAP.

It is not a stripped-down, limited-benefit tier. Qualifying members receive the same core benefits as other Walmart+ subscribers, including free delivery on eligible grocery orders of $35 or more, free next-day and two-day shipping on eligible Walmart.com items without an order minimum, and fuel discounts at participating Walmart, Exxon, Mobil, and Murphy stations.

That matters because the savings are not confined to a single category. A household that uses Walmart for a weekly grocery order may avoid delivery fees; someone who drives frequently could save 10 cents per gallon at participating fuel stations, although the discount is 5 cents per gallon in Alabama and availability varies by location. The program also includes a streaming choice: members can select either Peacock Premium or Paramount+ Essential, both ad-supported, and switch their selected service every 90 days.

In practical terms, Walmart+ Assist is Walmart’s version of a broader retail trend: making subscription benefits more accessible to people on lower incomes, rather than assuming paid convenience services are only for shoppers with extra room in their monthly budgets. The useful distinction is that the program discounts the membership itself – it does not alter a recipient’s government benefits or require a credit check.

Who qualifies?

Eligibility is based on participation in an approved public-assistance program. Walmart and its verification partner, SheerID, list SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, SSI, TANF, Tribal TANF, NSLP, and LIHEAP among the qualifying programs.

For readers unfamiliar with the abbreviations, SNAP is the food-assistance program commonly associated with EBT benefits; WIC supports eligible women, infants, and children; Medicaid provides health coverage for qualifying people; and LIHEAP helps eligible households with home-energy costs. The wider point is that eligibility is tied to proof of enrollment in one of these programs, not simply to a customer’s self-reported income.

Existing Walmart+ subscribers can also apply if they qualify. The discount is not solely a new-member promotion, and Walmart says applicants can select either a monthly or annual discounted plan after verification.

How sign-up works

The enrollment process is fairly straightforward. A shopper goes to Walmart’s Walmart+ Assist page, verifies eligibility through the program’s secure process, picks the monthly or annual plan, and can begin with a 30-day free trial. Walmart says verification does not involve a credit check and has no impact on current government-assistance benefits.

The crucial step is verification. Walmart+ Assist is meant for qualifying recipients, so customers should expect to provide information or documentation that confirms participation in an eligible program. SheerID handles the eligibility-verification layer and describes the discount as applying to both monthly and annual paid Walmart+ plans.

As with most subscription services, it is worth reading the fine print before enrolling. Grocery delivery has a $35 order minimum, some Marketplace items and freight or location surcharges are excluded from shipping perks, and gas savings depend on participating locations.

What members actually get

The headline benefits are useful, but their value depends on how a household shops.

  • Grocery delivery: Eligible grocery and household orders over $35 can be delivered free, sometimes as soon as the same day; Walmart says Express Delivery can also save members up to $9.95 in total fees.
  • Shipping: Eligible Walmart.com orders qualify for free next-day and two-day shipping with no order minimum.
  • Fuel discounts: Members save 10 cents per gallon at participating locations and can access member fuel pricing at Sam’s Club.
  • Streaming: One ad-supported streaming service – Peacock Premium or Paramount+ Essential – is included at a time.
  • Pharmacy delivery: Eligible orders including prescriptions may arrive as soon as the same day, with medication eligibility and location restrictions.
  • Extra perks: Walmart also lists monthly photo prints, savings on money services, free flat-tire repair and road-hazard warranty, free online pet-care access through Pawp, at-home returns in select areas, Scan & Go checkout, and early access to some events and deals.

Not every perk will matter to every person. The strongest case for Walmart+ Assist is likely a household that already buys groceries and basics from Walmart, has limited time or transportation options, or makes enough deliveries and fuel purchases for the membership to pay for itself.

Is it worth getting?

At $49 per year, Walmart+ Assist is easier to justify than a standard-priced membership, but it is still a paid subscription. The best way to assess it is to look at habits rather than the long list of included perks.

A customer who uses pickup almost exclusively, rarely orders online, does not drive, and already has the included streaming service may find little value in joining. On the other hand, avoiding a handful of grocery delivery fees, using free shipping for recurring household purchases, and claiming the fuel discount can quickly make the annual cost feel modest. Walmart positions the plan as delivering all Walmart+ benefits at half price, not as a separate welfare benefit or a replacement for any government program.

There is also a small but important privacy reassurance in Walmart’s pitch: the company says verification does not affect existing benefits and does not require a credit check. For eligible shoppers wary of a discounted program that sounds too complicated or intrusive, that is the practical takeaway. Walmart+ Assist is simply a verified discount on a retail membership, designed to make services such as delivery, shipping, fuel savings, and streaming more affordable for people already receiving qualifying assistance.
