The modern home is steadily becoming a playground for artificial intelligence, but until recently, much of that tech felt like a novelty. We’ve seen smart fridges that tell you when your milk is expiring and robot vacuums that mapping your living room, but the laundry room has remained stubbornly transactional. You sort, you throw it in, you twist a dial, and you hope for the best.

Samsung is looking to change that mundane routine with the launch of its newest Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer lineup. Unveiled today in Korea, this duo isn’t just connected to Wi-Fi; it’s designed to actively take the guesswork out of fabric care, attempting to turn one of the household’s most chore-heavy zones into a seamless, automated experience.

At the heart of the new lineup are two updated proprietary systems: AI Wash+ and AI Dry+. While previous iterations of smart washers could sense the weight of a load, the AI Wash+ system expands its sensory vocabulary. It can now recognize five distinct fabric types, including trickier materials like denim and outdoor gear. Using a network of internal sensors, the machine calculates the load’s weight, identifies the fabrics, and dispenses the exact amount of water and detergent needed. It even monitors the turbidity—or cloudiness—of the water during the cycle to judge how dirty your clothes actually are, dynamically adjusting the washing time or adding extra detergent on the fly.

The matching dryer plays a similar game of precision. Its AI Dry+ feature continuously evaluates moisture levels and temperature while keeping tabs on four different fabric types. By adapting the internal Inverter Compressor and Heat Exchanger in real time, the dryer ensures you aren’t blasting delicate threads with unnecessary heat. Samsung claims this intelligent optimization can slash drying times and cut energy consumption by up to 20%.

Beyond the internal mechanics, the most noticeable change for users will be the interface. The appliance duo features a sleek, 7-inch LCD touchscreen called the Smart Screen. Acting as a central hub, it acts less like a traditional appliance interface and more like a personalized dashboard. It learns your household’s specific routines, suggests frequently used cycles, and offers detailed post-laundry reports via the SmartThings app detailing exactly how much water and electricity you used.

For moments when your hands are full of heavy laundry baskets, Samsung has integrated an upgraded version of its Bixby voice assistant. Instead of relying on rigid, robotic commands, the system understands natural language. You can casually ask it to start a specific cycle, add an extra rinse, or ask it to explain what an error message on the screen means without ever touching the glass.

Crucially, the launch arrives at a time when household energy costs are top of mind for consumers globally. Through the SmartThings Energy platform, users can activate an AI Energy Mode. On the washing machine side, this leverages Samsung’s AI Ecobubble technology to wash clothes efficiently in cooler water, which the company claims can reduce the appliance’s energy use by up to 70% without sacrificing cleaning power.

The new Bespoke AI lineup—featuring washers ranging from 10.5kg to 13kg capacities built into a standard 24-inch depth, alongside matching dryers—is rolling out to select global markets starting this month. It’s a clear signal of where the industry is headed: less about simply spinning clothes, and more about building a home ecosystem that thinks for itself.
