Instagram beats TikTok in the download race - here's why

The battle for social media supremacy has taken an unexpected turn. Contrary to popular belief, Instagram isn’t losing the platform wars after all. In fact, the beloved app has outpaced the once-unstoppable TikTok in global downloads last year, according to data from the market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.

The Numbers Don’t Lie Sensor Tower’s findings reveal that Instagram downloads increased by an impressive 20% in 2023 compared to the previous year. In stark contrast, TikTok saw a mere 4% growth over the same period, with its daily-active-user growth also plateauing. These figures suggest that Instagram’s strategy of adapting to the short-video craze while maintaining its core strengths is paying off handsomely.

The Secret Sauce: Reels, Photos, and User-Friendly Features The simplest explanation for Instagram’s resurgence lies in the app’s ability to cater to diverse user preferences. Its short-video product, Reels, has proven to be just as engaging as TikTok’s offerings, appealing to the younger generation’s appetite for bite-sized content. Simultaneously, Instagram’s robust photo tools continue to attract users who value traditional photo-sharing capabilities.

Moreover, Instagram has been careful not to alienate its user base by forcing unpopular features down their throats, unlike TikTok’s approach with shoppable videos. “Instagram already has Reels, and it already caters to a broader audience because it has those other social media features,” explained Abe Yousef, a senior insights analyst at Sensor Tower. “Somebody who might not necessarily be a fan of Reels could still be a fan of the main feed, which is the photo sharing, and then stories and chat, which are legacy social media features.”

Hitting Where It Hurts: The Lack of Messaging and Photo Features TikTok’s limited photo features and lack of robust messaging capabilities could be contributing to its slowing growth. As top Meta executives like Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram’s Adam Mosseri have pointed out, a significant portion of Reels are shared through direct messages (DMs) – a feature TikTok still lacks. “TikTok has slowed down on an engagement perspective as well,” Yousef remarked.

Sensing the gap, TikTok may be in the process of developing a dedicated photo app, according to an analysis of code uncovered by the tech blog The SpAndroid. This move could be an attempt to recapture lost ground and cater to users’ diverse needs.

Meanwhile, users spent about an hour on Instagram and about 53 minutes each day on Facebook, suggesting that Instagram’s engagement numbers are catching up.
