Indians, hear me out.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone has finally given us a price to stare at, and I can’t stop looking at it next to another product sitting on Apple’s own store.

The iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 in India. Apple’s 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at ₹2,39,900.

That’s a ₹60,000 difference.

The first foldable iPhone costs ₹60,000 more than a 14-inch MacBook Pro.

And yes, I know. Apple is expensive in India. We’ve had that conversation approximately a million times. That’s not really what this is about.

The funny part is seeing Apple’s first foldable iPhone enter a price bracket occupied by one of its own professional laptops.

And before someone says this is an India-only comparison, there’s an important detail: in the U.S., the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, and the 14-inch MacBook Pro also starts at $1,999.

₹3 lakh for the first one

The iPhone Duo is Apple‘s first foldable iPhone. Apple says it has a 7.6-inch folding Super Retina XDR display, a 5.4-inch outer display, an A20 Pro chip, a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system, a titanium frame and hinge cover, and a design built around multiple ways of using the phone when folded or opened.

All of that sounds very Apple.

Then you look at the Indian price.

₹2,99,900.

Suddenly, the 14-inch MacBook Pro sitting at ₹2,39,900 starts looking at the iPhone Duo like it has some questions.

Apple’s Indian store currently lists the 14-inch MacBook Pro from ₹2,39,900, with the M5 chip as the entry configuration.

The difference isn’t ₹5,000.

It isn’t ₹10,000.

It’s ₹60,000.

That’s enough money to make this comparison genuinely weird.

Of course, a MacBook Pro and an iPhone are completely different products. One is a laptop and one is a phone. Nobody is realistically going to hold an iPhone Duo in one hand and a MacBook Pro in the other and ask which one makes more sense as a phone.

But that’s precisely why this comparison is funny.

We’re not comparing their features.

We’re comparing their prices.

And Apple’s first foldable phone has crossed the price of its own 14-inch professional laptop in India.

But the U.S. tells a different story

This is where I think the comparison gets more interesting.

In the U.S., the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB. Apple’s 14-inch MacBook Pro also starts at $1,999.

So an American customer can look at these two products and say, “Okay, they’re the same price.”

An Indian customer gets a rather different equation:

iPhone Duo: ₹2,99,900

14-inch MacBook Pro: ₹2,39,900

Difference: ₹60,000

That doesn’t mean Apple is somehow charging an extra ₹60,000 simply because the product is a foldable iPhone. International pricing involves taxes, duties, currency conversions, regional pricing and plenty of other factors.

I’m not trying to reverse-engineer Apple’s pricing strategy here.

I’m just looking at two prices on Apple’s Indian website and asking the obvious question:

Why does the phone cost more than the laptop?

And this is only generation one

Here’s the part that makes me wonder where this story goes from here.

This is the first iPhone Duo.

Apple has presumably got a long road ahead for the foldable iPhone. There will be future generations, future hardware revisions and future improvements. We don’t know what Apple will change or how it will price them, so there’s no point pretending we know what the second generation will cost.

But we can already joke about the naming.

Five ways to say, “Congratulations, you’re ready to spend another pile of money on the next foldable.”

And yes, I hope everyone who buys the first Duo enjoys it enough to upgrade to the iPhone Duo 2nd Gen, or whatever Apple eventually calls it.

Because apparently we’re starting this journey at ₹2,99,900.

Maybe wait for the repair bill

Now we get to the part that made me check Apple’s repair pages more than once.

Apple has already told us when Indians can buy the iPhone Duo. Preorders begin at 5:30 pm IST on October 16, and the phone becomes available from October 23. The U.S. preorder starts at 5:00 am Pacific on October 16, with availability beginning October 23.

But if you’re planning to spend nearly ₹3 lakh on one, you might also want to think about what happens after you accidentally introduce it to a table corner.

I checked Apple’s Service and Repair pages again, and the iPhone Duo still isn’t listed in the standard device-selection interface on either Apple’s India or U.S. repair pages. Apple’s repair pages say they provide estimated out-of-warranty service costs after selecting a device and model, but the Duo isn’t currently available there.

So Apple has told us how much the phone costs.

Apple has told us when we can buy it.

But the standard repair-price page is still essentially saying:

“iPhone Duo? Give us a minute.”

Meanwhile, Google is already willing to play the guessing game.

If you search for something like “iPhone Duo display replacement cost,” Google’s AI Overview can surface an estimated display-repair figure approaching ₹96,000. That’s useful as a clue, but it isn’t the same thing as Apple officially publishing an out-of-warranty repair price.

And that’s an important distinction. I don’t want to take an AI-generated estimate and present it as an Apple repair bill when Apple’s own repair page hasn’t actually listed one.

Apple has, however, published AppleCare+ pricing and service fees.

Apple’s Indian education store currently lists AppleCare+ for the iPhone Duo at ₹51,900 for two years. Apple also lists the applicable iPhone AppleCare+ service fees as ₹2,500 for screen and back-glass damage and ₹8,900 for other accidental damage.

So if you buy the ₹2,99,900 Duo and add the ₹51,900 AppleCare+ plan, you’re looking at ₹3,51,800 before you even start talking about accessories.

And that’s the protected version.

For the standard out-of-warranty repair bill, we’re still waiting.

The MacBook Pro is still sitting there

And this is where I keep coming back to that MacBook Pro.

₹2,99,900 for the entry iPhone Duo.

₹2,39,900 for the entry 14-inch MacBook Pro.

The MacBook Pro is ₹60,000 cheaper.

I’m not suggesting that someone should buy a MacBook Pro instead of an iPhone Duo. That’s not the point.

The point is that Apple’s own pricing has created a comparison so strange that it’s difficult not to make.

The Duo isn’t just competing with other premium phones anymore. At ₹2,99,900, it’s sitting above one of Apple’s own professional laptops.

And if you want more storage, the numbers get even more entertaining.

The 512GB Duo costs ₹3,24,900. The 1TB model is ₹3,74,900, while the 2TB version reaches ₹4,49,900 in India.

So ₹2,99,900 is only the beginning.

Not the end.

Indians, maybe take a breath

There’s no shortage of people who will happily spend ₹2,99,900 on the iPhone Duo. That’s fine. If someone wants Apple’s first foldable and the price works for them, that’s their decision.

But for everyone else, maybe take a second look at the price.

The iPhone Duo isn’t even available yet. Preorders don’t begin until October 16, and availability starts October 23.

There’s time to think about it.

There’s time to look at the MacBook Pro.

There’s time to look at the repair situation.

There’s time to wonder whether Apple’s first foldable iPhone is worth ₹2,99,900 to you.

And there’s definitely time to wait and see what happens with those repair prices.

Because if I’m going to spend nearly ₹3 lakh on a phone, I’d at least like Apple to tell me what happens when I break the expensive folding bits.

Until then, Indians, hear me out:

The iPhone Duo costs more than a 14-inch MacBook Pro.

At least in India.

And somehow, that’s only the beginning of the foldable iPhone story.
