For over a decade, Apple enthusiasts have speculated about the company launching its own TV set. The idea dates back to as early as 2009 when rumors hinted at an Apple-branded television poised to revolutionize home entertainment. Yet, despite occasional teases, no such product ever materialized. Now, reports suggest that the dream might not be dead after all.

Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman recently reignited the speculation, noting in his newsletter that Apple is “evaluating” the possibility of making its own TV. This comes as the company explores deeper forays into smart home technology, like a wall-mounted hub to manage connected devices and apps. While still in the conceptual phase, this potential Apple TV could align with Apple’s broader ecosystem strategy, integrating seamlessly with iPhones, Macs, and the Apple TV streaming platform.

Why now?

Apple has already cemented itself as a dominant player in streaming hardware with the Apple TV box and through partnerships with major TV manufacturers like LG and Samsung. Many TVs today come with native support for AirPlay, HomeKit, and the Apple TV+ app. However, a proprietary Apple TV set could allow for even tighter integration, offering features that third-party manufacturers might not be able to replicate, such as advanced AI-driven smart features, exclusive design elements, and premium hardware.

Challenges in the TV market

The TV industry isn’t an easy one to conquer. Margins are razor-thin, and established players like LG and Samsung dominate with innovations in OLED and QD-OLED displays. If Apple enters this space, it’s likely they’d target the premium segment, positioning their TV as a high-end, design-forward option with cutting-edge technology. This mirrors their approach with products like the iPhone and MacBook.

A legacy of ambition

The idea of an Apple TV isn’t new. In fact, Steve Jobs himself told biographer Walter Isaacson that he had “finally cracked” the concept of reinventing the television, envisioning a simple and intuitive user experience. Despite these ambitions, Tim Cook, then COO, dismissed the TV market as unappealing due to its commoditized nature. Times may have changed, though, as Apple appears increasingly committed to carving out a space in smart home ecosystems.

What could an Apple TV look like?

Speculation aside, an Apple-branded TV would likely embody the company’s design ethos—minimalist, functional, and sleek. Features could include:

  • Deep ecosystem integration: Think automatic syncing with Apple devices, exclusive Siri-powered controls, and unique HomeKit capabilities.
  • Advanced displays: Possibly leveraging MicroLED technology for superior brightness and energy efficiency.
  • Premium audio: Building on the company’s expertise with products like the HomePod.

While Apple’s ambitions for a dedicated TV set are still speculative, the timing feels right. With growing competition in the smart home space and increasing consumer appetite for seamless technology ecosystems, an Apple TV could be the company’s next big hardware innovation. For now, though, we’ll have to wait and see if these whispers materialize into a glowing screen in our living rooms.
