Apple has unveiled a redesigned MacBook Pro with a touchscreen and a new tandem OLED display, marking a major change for its professional laptop lineup. Announced today, October 28, 2026, the new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display brings touch input to the Mac for the first time, alongside higher display brightness, deeper contrast, and a 120Hz refresh rate.
The new models come in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes and are powered by Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. They also introduce Dynamic Island to the Mac, bringing a familiar iPhone feature to the laptop’s display.
MacBook Pro gets its first touchscreen
The biggest change is the addition of touch support. Until now, Apple has kept touchscreen functionality out of its MacBook lineup, relying on the keyboard, trackpad, and external accessories for interaction. The new MacBook Pro changes that approach by letting users interact directly with on-screen content.
Touch input complements the existing keyboard and trackpad rather than replacing them. Users can navigate interfaces, scroll through webpages, zoom into images, manipulate objects, and interact with supported creative applications using their fingers.
The feature could be particularly useful for creative professionals working with visual content, including illustrations, music production, and 3D projects. Users can continue relying on traditional Mac controls when those are more convenient.
PROLED XDR brings tandem OLED technology to Mac
The new MacBook Pro introduces Apple’s PROLED XDR display, which uses tandem OLED technology. Unlike a conventional single-layer OLED panel, tandem OLED uses multiple light-emitting layers to improve brightness and display performance.
Apple rates the display for up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz. These specifications should help the laptop deliver bright HDR highlights, deep blacks, and smoother scrolling and animations.

The display is designed for professional workflows where image quality and color accuracy matter, including photo editing, video production, and graphic design. The new panel also brings OLED’s pixel-level light control to the MacBook Pro, allowing individual pixels to turn off for black areas of an image.
Apple offers a nano-texture display option for users who want to reduce reflections and glare in bright working environments.
Dynamic Island comes to the Mac
The redesigned display also introduces Dynamic Island to the MacBook Pro. First introduced on the iPhone, the feature provides a compact interactive area for notifications, ongoing activities, and other information.
On the Mac, Dynamic Island brings supported activities and controls into a dedicated area of the display. It adds another way to access relevant information without constantly switching between windows and applications.
The feature is part of a broader update that combines a new display design with touch interaction while retaining the MacBook Pro’s familiar laptop form factor.
M5 Pro and M5 Max power the new models
Apple is offering the touchscreen MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max processors. The chips target demanding workloads such as software development, video editing, 3D rendering, and on-device artificial intelligence.
The new touchscreen models are distinct from the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip that Apple introduced earlier in its October product announcements. The M6 model retains the existing Liquid Retina XDR display and does not share the new touchscreen and tandem OLED features.
This distinction matters for buyers: the touchscreen and PROLED XDR display are part of a more expensive MacBook Pro tier rather than a standard upgrade across the entire lineup.
MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR pricing and availability
Apple’s new touchscreen MacBook Pro is available in 14-inch and 16-inch configurations, with pricing depending on the display size and processor.
The starting prices are:
- 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro: $2,899
- 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro: $3,399
- 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max: $4,499
- 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max: $4,799
Preorders open on October 28, 2026, in the United States and other selected markets. Apple says the new MacBook Pro will begin arriving to customers and become available in Apple Store locations on November 6.
A major change for Apple’s professional laptops
The new MacBook Pro brings together three notable changes: touchscreen interaction, tandem OLED technology, and Dynamic Island. The display upgrade is particularly significant for users who rely on accurate colors, high contrast, and HDR performance, while touch support offers another way to work with creative applications.
The higher starting prices also make these models a more specialized option than the standard M6 MacBook Pro. For professionals who want both Apple’s traditional laptop controls and direct interaction with the display, the new MacBook Pro represents the biggest shift in how the company approaches its high-end Mac laptops in years.
