Apple adds touch gesture code to macOS ahead of rumored touchscreen Mac

New touch-related code inside macOS could be another sign Apple's first touchscreen notebook is almost here.

Apple may finally be laying the software groundwork for one of its most rumored hardware products: a touchscreen Mac.

The latest macOS Golden Gate 27.2 beta includes new touch-specific gesture recognition code across several built-in Apple apps, fueling speculation that the company is preparing for its first touchscreen Mac notebook. While the code doesn’t confirm new hardware is on the way, it arrives just as reports suggest Apple is getting ready to unveil an OLED-equipped MacBook—possibly branded as the MacBook Ultra—later this month.

New touch gesture code appears across macOS

Developers examining the latest macOS 27.2 beta discovered several new touch-related gesture recognizers embedded within Apple’s own apps.

Among the additions are:

  • Safari gains a touch sentinel recognizer.
  • Photos includes a PXGTouchDwellGestureRecognizer.
  • Notes now references an ICTouchPressGestureRecognizer.
  • Quick Look adds a new dragTouch feature.

These additions suggest Apple is expanding native touch input support throughout macOS instead of limiting it to a single interface layer. If a touchscreen Mac is indeed coming, Apple will need its core apps to understand gestures like taps, long presses, dragging, and dwell interactions.

The latest beta also reportedly includes a new long-press animation for Dock icons, another subtle hint that macOS is becoming increasingly touch-aware.

Sidecar could be the less exciting explanation

As intriguing as the new code is, there’s another possibility.

macOS Golden Gate recently introduced full touch input support for Sidecar, Apple’s feature that lets users use an iPad as a secondary display for a Mac. Apple could simply be expanding those capabilities rather than quietly preparing for a touchscreen laptop.

That makes these discoveries interesting—but not definitive proof.

The clues keep piling up

This isn’t the first time macOS has shown signs of becoming more finger-friendly.

The original release of macOS Golden Gate added pull-to-refresh gestures to apps including Safari, Mail, and Calendar, marking another small but noticeable move toward touch-first interactions. Bloomberg has also reported that Apple has been redesigning parts of macOS to better accommodate touch input by dynamically enlarging controls and interface elements when users interact with the display.

Individually, these changes could be dismissed as improvements for existing features like Sidecar. Together, however, they paint a picture of Apple steadily modernizing macOS for a future where fingers—not just a trackpad or mouse—are expected input methods.

A touchscreen Mac could arrive sooner than expected

Rumors surrounding Apple’s first touchscreen Mac have accelerated in recent months.

Current reports suggest Apple is working on a thinner and lighter OLED notebook that could debut as early as late October, although some reports indicate a November launch remains possible. The machine is expected to feature Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, an OLED display, and even a Dynamic Island, making it one of the biggest Mac hardware redesigns in years.

If those rumors prove accurate, the touch gesture code appearing throughout macOS 27.2 makes perfect sense. Apple typically updates its software platform before introducing major new hardware capabilities, ensuring developers and system apps are ready on day one.

Like spotting extra place settings before guests arrive, the dinner hasn’t started yet—but someone is clearly getting ready.
