Apple is reportedly developing a smart doorbell camera integrated with its renowned Face ID technology. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, this innovative device might hit the market as soon as late 2025.

The concept is simple yet revolutionary: the doorbell camera would unlock your door in much the same way your iPhone unlocks with a glance. By leveraging Face ID, the camera would recognize your face or those of other residents, automatically granting access without the need for keys or codes. This technology utilizes Apple’s Secure Enclave, a dedicated chip designed to store and process biometric data securely, ensuring that your facial recognition information is kept separate from the rest of the system’s hardware for enhanced privacy and security.

Gurman suggests that this smart doorbell isn’t just about recognition; it’s poised to integrate seamlessly with existing HomeKit smart locks. There’s speculation that Apple might collaborate with a smart lock manufacturer to provide a comprehensive system right from the launch, enhancing the user experience by offering a fully integrated solution. This would not only streamline the setup process but also ensure compatibility and reliability, crucial aspects for smart home devices.

Moreover, the device is expected to incorporate Apple’s in-house “Proxima” chip, which combines both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. This chip has been rumored for other upcoming Apple products like the next HomePod mini and Apple TV, indicating a broader strategy to enhance connectivity and performance across their smart home ecosystem.

This development comes amidst a flurry of rumors about Apple’s renewed focus on smart home technologies under the banner of Apple Intelligence. Alongside the smart doorbell, there are whispers of additional products like another smart home camera, possibly an Apple-branded television, and innovative smart home displays. One display is speculated to be a simple, iPad-like device that can magnetically attach to various mounts, while another involves a display mounted on a robotic arm for more dynamic positioning within a room.

The integration of Face ID into everyday home security could offer a new level of convenience and security, potentially making physical keys obsolete for those within the Apple ecosystem. However, this also raises questions about privacy, as facial recognition technology, while convenient, has been at the center of privacy debates. Apple has always emphasized privacy as a cornerstone of its product philosophy, but how this scales up to home security devices will be a key point of interest for consumers and privacy advocates alike.

As we look forward to the potential 2025 release, the smart doorbell with Face ID could be a game-changer in how we think about home access and security, potentially setting new standards for the integration of technology in daily life. This move by Apple could not only compete with established players like Ring and Nest but also redefine what we expect from our homes in terms of tech, privacy, and user experience.

For now, these are all projections based on insider reports, and as with all tech development, plans can evolve. However, if Apple follows through with this vision, we might be on the brink of a new era in smart home technology where your face becomes your key.
