Leaked M4 roadmap hints at sweeping Mac refresh, obsoleting new models

A new leak details Apple's ambitious roadmap to bring M4 chips to MacBook Pros, iMacs, Mac minis, MacBook Airs, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro between late 2024-2025. Is it too soon after M3?

Brace yourselves, Apple fans – a whirlwind of new Mac hardware could be on the horizon, and if the rumors prove true, it might just render your shiny new M3 MacBook obsolete before you’ve even had a chance to truly break it in. Renowned Apple leaker Mark Gurman has dropped a bombshell, unveiling a detailed roadmap that outlines Apple’s ambitious plans to introduce the next generation of its homegrown silicon, the M4 chip, across the entire Mac lineup in a sweeping refresh.

It was only last October that Apple unveiled the M3 chip at its “Scary Fast” event, ushering in a new era of performance for the MacBook Air. Yet, if Gurman’s predictions hold water, the Cupertino tech giant is already gearing up to one-up itself, potentially leaving early M3 adopters feeling a tinge of buyer’s remorse.

So, what does this alleged roadmap entail? Buckle up, because it’s a doozy.

According to Gurman, we can expect a low-end 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 chip to kick things off around the end of 2024. Hot on its heels, a 24-inch iMac sporting the same next-gen silicon is also slated for a late 2024 debut.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Gurman suggests that high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, packing the rumored M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, could make their grand entrance somewhere between late 2024 and early 2025. Not to be left out, the beloved Mac mini is also reportedly in line for an M4 and M4 Pro refresh during the same timeframe.

As if that wasn’t enough, 2025 is shaping up to be an absolute bonanza for Mac enthusiasts. Gurman hints at the arrival of new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Airs, scheduled for a spring 2025 launch. Meanwhile, the beefy Mac Studio is expected to receive a high-end M4 chip around the middle of the year, and the heavyweight Mac Pro could potentially debut with a powerhouse M4 Ultra chip in the second half of 2025.

Now, it’s worth noting that while Gurman has earned a reputation as a reliable source for Apple leaks, this roadmap should be taken with a grain of salt until official confirmation from the company itself. However, the sheer scope of the rumored lineup is undeniably exciting, kicking off with brand-new MacBook Pros and a refreshed iMac fitted with the M4 chip. One can only hope that this iMac refresh will finally grant Apple’s iconic all-in-one a long-overdue splash of color beyond the classic aluminum hue.

The year 2025 looks equally enticing, with Gurman hinting at the introduction of the M4 Ultra chip through the Mac Pro – a surprising move, considering we haven’t even seen an M3 Ultra variant yet. As we noted when the M4 refresh rumors first surfaced, this rapid turnaround and sweeping hardware update could be seen as a desperate attempt by Apple to catch up to the competition in the increasingly crucial arena of AI-focused chips and computing.

Apple has historically taken a “watch and wait” approach when it comes to diving headfirst into new technologies, but it appears the company is now ready to introduce its take on AI-focused consumer computing. While Apple has been leveraging its ‘Neural Engine’ tech for AI workloads since the A11 Bionic chip in the iPhone 8, the recent AI explosion and the prevalence of neural processing units (NPUs) likely have the tech titan keen to give its AI capabilities a significant boost.

However, this aggressive push towards the M4 generation risks ruffling the feathers of those who recently invested in an M3 Mac product, leaving them feeling like their shiny new purchase has already been outmoded before they’ve had a chance to truly put it through its paces.
