Sony has officially revealed something Grand Theft Auto fans have been waiting to see: a pair of limited-edition DualSense wireless controllers inspired by Grand Theft Auto VI. The controllers were unveiled during PlayStation’s September 3 State of Play presentation, putting an end to the speculation around whether a special GTA 6 controller would actually make it to market.
And yes, they’re real.
Sony is offering two versions of the controller, one in black and one in white, with both designs taking their visual cues from the neon-soaked world of Vice City. The company says the controllers are designed to capture the atmosphere of Grand Theft Auto VI, from its bright coastal daytime scenes to the glowing nightlife that has become synonymous with the fictional Florida-inspired city.
The reveal feels particularly well-timed. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, meaning these controllers will hit stores on the same day as the game itself. Rockstar Games has already been steadily ramping up the marketing campaign, including its recent extended look at the game, which was captured entirely from PS5 gameplay.
The more interesting part of Sony’s announcement, though, is the design.
The white edition is intended to represent Vice City during the day, with a cleaner look inspired by the city’s beaches, pastel skies and laid-back atmosphere. The black model goes in the opposite direction, leaning into Vice City after dark and its neon-heavy nightlife.
Neither controller is simply a standard DualSense with a GTA VI logo printed across the middle. Both have a shimmering, color-shifting finish designed to evoke the changing colors of a Vice City sunset and neon lights. Sony has also molded palm-tree details directly into the controller, giving the designs some physical texture rather than relying entirely on printed graphics. Official Grand Theft Auto VI branding completes the look.
That distinction matters because limited-edition PlayStation controllers have increasingly become collectibles in their own right. A game-specific design can easily end up spending more time sitting on a shelf than being used, and these two certainly look like they were designed with that audience in mind.
At the same time, they aren’t just decorative pieces.
Because these are DualSense controllers, they retain the features that make Sony’s PS5 controller different from a conventional gamepad. Grand Theft Auto VI will make use of the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, with Sony saying the controller will respond dynamically to the action and provide varying resistance through the triggers. In other words, the special-edition controller isn’t sacrificing functionality for the sake of the design.
That could make the PS5 version of GTA VI particularly interesting for people who care about tactile feedback. Rockstar has already positioned the PS5 as the platform where the game “plays best,” and its recent extended look was captured using PS5 gameplay footage.
There is, however, a slightly annoying part for anyone hoping to simply walk into a store and grab one later.
Both controllers are being sold in limited quantities. The white version will be available through PlayStation’s direct store and participating retailers, while the black version is more restricted, with Sony saying it will be available exclusively through direct.playstation.com where that service operates, alongside select retailers in other regions.
In the United States, pre-orders open September 10 at 10 am ET, or 7 am PT. Sony is also opening pre-orders at 10 am local time in several European markets, including the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Portugal will handle pre-orders through the PlayStation Store hardware section.
The price is set at $84.99 in the United States, with equivalent recommended pricing of €84.99 in Europe, £74.99 in the U.K. and ¥12,480 in Japan, including tax. The exact release date and availability can vary by country and region, although Sony says the controllers begin launching November 19.
That puts the controller in an interesting position. It isn’t priced like some ultra-premium collector’s accessory, but it does carry a premium over a standard DualSense, making the decision fairly straightforward for most buyers: if you want a second PS5 controller, the GTA VI versions offer a much more distinctive design; if you already have a perfectly good DualSense, you’re essentially paying extra for the Grand Theft Auto connection.
And let’s be honest, that’s probably exactly who Sony is targeting.
Grand Theft Auto VI is one of those releases where merchandise can become almost as desirable as the game itself. The wait for the sequel has been unusually long, and Rockstar has spent years building anticipation around its return to Vice City. The game’s story follows Jason and Lucia as they become caught up in a criminal conspiracy spanning the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City serving as its central location.
Rockstar has also confirmed that GTA VI will launch on November 19, following a previous delay from its earlier planned release window. The studio said the additional development time was intended to give the game the level of polish players expect.
Now Sony is turning that anticipation into hardware.
The timing is particularly notable because GTA VI pre-orders are already live, with Rockstar offering a Vintage Vice City Pack as a pre-order bonus. The game is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but Sony is clearly making a big push around the PS5 experience, including dedicated DualSense features and these new limited-edition controllers.
For longtime Grand Theft Auto fans, the black and white controllers also offer two very different interpretations of the same game. The white version feels more like the glossy, sun-drenched Vice City associated with beaches, pastel colors and daytime cruising. The black version is much moodier, leaning into the nightlife, neon signs and darker side of the city.
Personally, the black version feels like the more obvious collector’s piece. The darker finish gives the neon-inspired treatment more contrast, while the molded palm-tree details make it look less like a conventional branded controller. But the white model arguably does a better job of capturing the bright, almost exaggerated Miami-inspired aesthetic that Grand Theft Auto VI has shown us so far.
Whichever one wins the popularity contest, there’s a good chance these won’t remain sitting on store shelves for very long. Sony is explicitly describing both as limited-edition products, and GTA VI is exactly the kind of game that can turn an ordinary accessory into a piece of launch-day memorabilia.
The important dates are therefore pretty simple: pre-orders begin September 10, and the controllers launch starting November 19, the same day Grand Theft Auto VI arrives.
After years of waiting for the next Grand Theft Auto, it seems only fitting that fans now have another decision to make before launch: black or white?
