Apple has started to phase out some of its iconic iPhone models in Switzerland, signaling a broader move across the European Union. As we approach the end of 2024, the tech giant is aligning its product lineup with new EU regulations that mandate the adoption of USB-C ports on all new electronic devices.

The European Union has set a clear deadline of December 28, 2024, for all new smartphones and similar devices to switch to USB-C for charging. This move aims to reduce electronic waste by promoting a universal charger standard, easing the life of consumers who no longer need to juggle multiple chargers for different devices.

Apple, known for its proprietary Lightning connector since 2012, has gradually moved towards USB-C, starting with the iPhone 15 series in 2023. However, the iPhone SE, iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Plus continue to use the Lightning port, which contradicts the new EU regulation.

This week, observers from MacRumors and iGeneration noted that these models have vanished from Apple’s Swiss online store. A visit to the site will now greet you with a “currently unavailable” message for these particular models. This preemptive step in Switzerland, which isn’t officially in the EU but aligns with its market rules, suggests Apple is gearing up for a broader withdrawal across the EU.

While the Swiss store has taken the lead, other European Apple stores, like those in France and Spain, still show these models in stock. This discrepancy might be due to varying inventory levels or strategic timing. The big question remains: will Apple pull these models simultaneously across all EU countries just before the deadline, or will there be a staggered approach?

Apple has remained tight-lipped, with no immediate response to inquiries about this strategic retreat from the market. The tech community speculates on various reasons, from logistical preparations to ensuring a smooth transition to the new standards without last-minute consumer panic.

What’s next for the iPhone SE?

For fans of the budget-friendly iPhone SE, there’s a silver lining. Rumors, backed by reports from reputable sources like Bloomberg, are swirling that Apple is planning a fourth-generation iPhone SE in early 2025. This model is expected to not only sport the USB-C port but also upgrade to an OLED display, potentially bringing it more in line with Apple’s premium offerings.

For consumers, this transition is bittersweet. On the one hand, the move to USB-C simplifies life and aligns with global tech trends towards standardization. On the other, those who prefer or rely on older models face a forced upgrade or the search for a used Lightning-compatible device. However, authorized resellers in the EU might still offer these models until their stock runs out, providing a temporary buffer.

Looking forward

This isn’t just about changing a cable; it’s a moment that underscores the EU’s influence on global tech standards. It’s a shift towards sustainability and consumer convenience but also a reminder of how quickly technology evolves. As we move into 2025, watching how Apple and other manufacturers adapt to these regulations will be key.
