Apple‘s forthcoming iPhone SE 4 is poised to bridge the design gap with its more upscale counterparts, according to a recent report. The iPhone SE 3, unveiled in Spring 2022, maintained the iPhone 8’s 2017 body, but MacRumors now suggests that the upcoming model may closely resemble the iPhone 14, albeit with some subtle modifications.
Currently still on Apple’s shelves, the iPhone 14 boasts a 6.1-inch screen with a reduced notch—a feature introduced in the iPhone 13. While the iPhone 14 boasts a dual-camera setup, reports indicate that the iPhone SE 4 will likely house a single 48-megapixel rear camera developed under the codename “Portland.” This design choice aligns with the historical approach of the iPhone SE lineup, maintaining the flash’s position.
Despite opting for a single-camera system, the iPhone SE 4 might weigh slightly less than its iPhone 14 counterpart. The budget-friendly model is expected to retain the aluminum frame and glass backplate, but one notable departure is the inclusion of a USB-C port for charging, mirroring changes seen in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro.
MacRumors further speculates that the user-configurable Action button, introduced in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, may find its way to the iPhone SE 4. This button replaced the mute switch and is anticipated to become a standard feature across the entire iPhone 16 range, eventually extending to the iPhone SE 4.
While there was a two-year gap between the iPhone SE 2 (2020) and SE 3 (2022), MacRumors suggests that the release of the iPhone SE 4 may be delayed until 2025. Apple’s deliberate pace of innovation is evident, with the iPad family notably missing any new models this year—a rare occurrence in the 13-year history of the iPad.
