Apple is eyeing foldable iPhones and cellular Macs powered by its in-house modem

Apple is making big moves with foldable iPhones, cellular Macs, and connected Vision Pro devices. Here’s what we can expect from their 2025-2026 plans.

Apple‘s hardware roadmap suggests the company is quietly laying the groundwork for significant advancements in its product lineup, including foldable iPhones, cellular-connected Macs, and enhanced Vision Pro headsets. These innovations hinge largely on Apple’s development of an in-house cellular modem, a technology that could begin rolling out as early as 2025.

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple’s custom modem, codenamed Sinope, is expected to debut with the iPhone SE in 2025, replacing Qualcomm’s components. This shift is not just about cutting ties with Qualcomm—it’s a strategy to free up internal space, potentially enabling thinner devices like the rumored iPhone 17 “Air,” slated for later in 2025.

Thinner designs may also lead to Apple’s first foray into foldable phones. While foldable devices from Samsung and Huawei have matured over the years, Apple has remained cautious. A foldable iPhone might launch by 2026 (or maybe 2027), timed to capitalize on consumer interest as Apple aims to reinvigorate the declining foldable market. Analysts suggest Apple’s entry could drive a 30% growth in foldable shipments that year.

Another exciting prospect is the introduction of cellular connectivity across Apple’s broader ecosystem. By 2026, Macs might gain this feature, eliminating reliance on Wi-Fi or iPhone tethering. This move would offer significant mobility for professionals and travelers. Similarly, a future Vision Pro headset could integrate cellular support, allowing users greater freedom without tethering to an iPhone or Wi-Fi.

While the technical ambitions are clear, execution won’t be without challenges. Apple’s modem rollout spans three years and involves adapting the tech for various devices, including iPads, which are expected to see updates between 2025 and 2026. Moreover, competition in the foldable space will test Apple’s ability to differentiate its offerings. Rivals like Samsung dominate the foldable market, but consumer satisfaction has been mixed due to issues with durability and cost, leaving room for Apple to potentially “perfect” the concept.

What’s next?

Apple’s approach is a cautious, long-term play. The company is leveraging its ecosystem strength to ensure seamless integration of new technologies. If executed well, these innovations could redefine consumer expectations, from foldable devices to cellular-capable Macs. For now, all eyes are on Apple as it moves to reshape its hardware portfolio in the coming years.
