Huawei has just launched something truly wild — the world’s first dual-hinged, triple-screen foldable phone, and yes, it’s as pricey as it sounds. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design comes in at a jaw-dropping 19,999 yuan, or about $2,809 for the base 256GB model. That’s a whopping $310 more than the 16-inch MacBook Pro, which, for comparison, starts at $2,499.

But if you thought that was expensive, hang on. The price shoots up if you need more storage. The 512GB version will set you back 21,999 yuan (around $3,089), while the 1TB variant takes the cake at 23,999 yuan ($3,370). And despite the eye-watering price tag, this thing is already stirring up a storm in China. Retailer Vmall reported a staggering 3.7 million pre-orders even before the pricing was officially revealed. That’s some serious hype.

So, what makes this phone so special? Well, for starters, its design is pretty unique. Huawei’s engineers went all out with an inverse dual-hinge mechanism that folds in a “Z” shape. This lets you use the Mate XT in a few different modes. Fold it up, and you’ve got a regular 6.4-inch phone. Unfold it fully, and you’re looking at a massive 10.2-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2,232 x 3,184. If that’s too much screen for you, it also has a mid-way configuration that gives you a more manageable 7.9-inch screen.

The phone's internal structure revealing a complex system of metallic hinges and gears that allow for its folding mechanism. The hinges are designed with precision engineering to support the phone’s ability to fold in three sections, with visible interlocking parts that ensure stability and smooth motion. The background is dark, emphasizing the metallic sheen of the gold-colored hinge components against the black interior parts of the phone.

The screen appears to be illuminated from within, showcasing glowing golden-orange hues that highlight the sleek design and advanced technology of the foldable phone.

The device showcases an expansive, seamless screen with a striking black background featuring swirling gold and white patterns that resemble marble. A golden hinge is visible in the center of the device, indicating the folding mechanism, and there are speaker grilles on one side of the phone’s edge.

Under the hood, the phone is no slouch either. All models come packed with 16GB of RAM, which is more than enough to handle anything you throw at it. There’s a 5,600mAh battery to keep the lights on, and it supports Huawei’s 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, so you won’t be waiting around long to top up.

As for cameras, the Mate XT sports a versatile triple-lens setup. On the back, there’s a 50-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, and a 12-megapixel periscope camera for zoom shots. Up front, there’s an 8-megapixel selfie shooter tucked away in a hole-punch cutout on the left-most screen when the device is fully unfolded.

For now, this futuristic foldable is exclusive to China, with no word yet on if or when it’ll be available globally. Huawei is pushing the boundaries of what a smartphone can be — if you can afford it.
