Apple has finally acknowledged the complaints from iPhone 15 users who have been reporting overheating issues with their devices since the phones landed on the market last month.

According to a statement given to Forbes, Apple suggests that the overheating problem may be attributed to “increased background activity” during the initial setup or device restoration, causing the phone to “feel warmer during the first few days.”

In addition to this, Apple has identified a bug in iOS 17 that affects some users and has committed to resolving it through a forthcoming software update.

A report from Bloomberg also indicates that Apple has pointed the finger at certain apps for contributing to the overheating problem. An unnamed Apple spokesperson cited Instagram, Uber, and the game Asphalt 9 as potential culprits, claiming that these apps could be causing the devices to “run warmer than normal.” Notably, Instagram‘s parent company, Meta, has reportedly already taken steps to modify the app to mitigate this issue.

Since the highly-anticipated iPhone 15’s launch, widespread reports of overheating have circulated online. Some users have reported temperatures as high as 46 degrees Celsius, even during basic tasks like browsing social media. Others have expressed concerns that their phones have become too hot to hold without a protective case.

Initially, speculation centered around the new A17 Bionic chip, the first 3-nanometer chip used in an iPhone 15 Pro lineup, as a possible culprit for the overheating. However, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has dismissed this theory, instead suggesting that the overheating may be due to “compromises made in the thermal system design to achieve a lighter weight.” In his blog, Kuo explained that reduced heat dissipation area and the use of a titanium frame might negatively impact the smartphone’s thermal efficiency.

Kuo believes that Apple will address this issue through software updates but cautioned that significant improvements may be limited unless Apple opts to reduce processor performance, a measure that Apple has clarified it won’t take.

This isn’t the only issue associated with the new iPhone 15 models. Recently, a video by YouTuber JerryRigEverything showed one of the devices failing a bend test, being bent and broken with bare hands.
