Transcend has quietly upended the world of on‑the‑go storage this week with its brand‑new ESD420 portable SSD—complete with a built‑in magnetic attachment that snaps right onto MagSafe‑equipped iPhones. No more juggling cables or worrying about your storage drive falling off mid‑shoot: the ESD420 promises to marry the speed and capacity pros demand with the simplicity of Apple’s magnetic system.

When Apple reintroduced MagSafe for iPhones back in 2020, it sparked a renaissance in snap‑on accessories—from wallets to battery packs. But until now, very few solutions addressed the needs of mobile creators craving extra storage. Enter Transcend’s ESD420. With a discreet magnet array embedded in its chassis, this little powerhouse grips the back of any MagSafe‑compatible iPhone and sits there, ready to serve as your pocket‑sized vault.

In practice, that means videographers can mount the drive and hit record without fuss. Apple’s ProRes and ProRes RAW codecs—renowned for crystal‑clear 10‑bit color and minimal compression—often require external drives to keep pace. The ESD420 fulfills that mandate, enabling features like 4K ProRes capture on the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max lineups.

Despite offering up to 4TB of storage, the ESD420 tips the scale at just 48 grams (roughly the weight of a set of AirPods Pro). Transcend says it’s passed MIL‑STD‑810G drop‑resistance testing, meaning accidental slips or a tumble from tabletop height shouldn’t faze it. In lab conditions, units survived multiple drops onto concrete from 1.2m without so much as a data hiccup.

Transcend’s color lineup—Space Gray and Gold—was chosen to match Apple’s own finishes, ensuring the SSD looks like a first‑party accessory rather than an add‑on. And thanks to its magnetic base, you can also stick it to any steel surface—think tripods, desks, or even the refrigerator—so you’re never hunting for a safe spot to set it down.

Under the hood, the ESD420 leverages a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface (20Gbps) and SLC cache technology to hit sequential read/write speeds of up to 2,000MB/s. While Apple’s hardware currently caps iPhone transfers around 10Gbps (roughly 1,250MB/s), attaching the SSD to a MacBook Pro or Windows PC via the included USB‑C cable unlocks the full firehose, making large transfers a breeze.

Even at the iPhone’s lower ceiling, that’s more than enough bandwidth for uninterrupted 4K ProRes shoots, burst photo offloads, and rapid backups. For hybrid workflows—where you switch between phone, tablet, and desktop—this consistency is a godsend.

Though its magnetic feature is obviously designed with iPhone fans in mind, Transcend didn’t want to alienate the rest of us. The ESD420 uses standard exFAT formatting out of the box, so it’s plug‑and‑play on:

  • iOS/iPadOS (via Apple’s Files app)
  • macOS
  • Windows
  • Android (with USB‑C ports)
  • Gaming consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X/S)

Just snap it on your phone to shoot, then pop it onto your PC to edit—it really is that simple.

Privacy‑minded professionals will appreciate the ESD420’s hardware‑based AES 256‑bit encryption. Through Transcend’s Elite software on macOS and Windows, you can set a password, activate a one‑time‑password (OTP) recovery feature, or even lock the drive entirely, safeguarding your footage against unauthorized access.

As of this writing, Transcend has yet to announce official pricing or a ship date for the ESD420. The drive will be offered in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, but how much those cost remains a mystery.
