Imagine this: you’re standing in your kitchen, waiting for your popcorn to pop, and instead of just staring at the microwave, you’re watching an episode of your favorite show. Welcome to the future, folks, where even your microwave comes with a 27-inch LCD touchscreen. LG has decided to one-up Samsung in the ongoing appliance screen wars by introducing the LG SIGNATURE microwave, a beast of a kitchen gadget that’s part culinary assistant, and part entertainment center.

LG proclaims this microwave’s screen delivers an “immersive entertainment experience.” Translation: it’s a prime spot for ads when you’re not cooking, ensuring you might feel less buyer’s remorse for splurging on this tech marvel. Pair it with LG’s oven, and you can watch your roast cook in real-time, no more stooping over to peer through the oven door.

This isn’t LG’s first rodeo with screens on appliances. Remember the fridge that turned into a see-through window with a double tap? Or the washers and dryers with their own little control screens? Yeah, this is sort of like that but on steroids. The whole idea is to turn your appliances into smart devices that not only do their job but also entertain, inform, and yes, show ads.

This move comes hot on the heels of LG’s 2023 announcement to shift from just selling hardware to creating a service-based model that keeps the cash rolling in. And let’s not forget, they’ve already started showing full-screen ads on idle TVs.

The strategy here is clear: screens on everything. Samsung might have started with a 4.3-inch display, but they’ve now gone up to 32 inches. LG’s response? Let’s make the microwave the next big thing with a screen size that’s practically a small TV. It’s a bold departure from the simplicity of buttons and dials, which, let’s be honest, have served us pretty well so far.

As for the nitty-gritty price, where you can get one, or when it will ship? LG’s keeping those cards close to their chest for now. But hold onto your spatulas because all will be revealed at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, starting January 7th. If you’re heading there, swing by booth #15004 at the Convention Center. You’ll get to see this microwave in action, alongside LG’s bendable OLED gaming monitors (yes, you read that right, bendable) and even an indoor gardening lamp for your very own kitchen herb garden.

This whole screen-everywhere approach might seem like overkill to some, but it’s undeniably a peek into where we’re headed. Whether it’s watching Netflix while your dinner heats up or just having another screen to swipe through your socials, the kitchen is getting a high-tech makeover. And with CES around the corner, we’re all just popcorn away from seeing how this tech transforms our daily cooking routines or, at the very least, entertains us while we wait for the ding.
