Google is bringing a more unified shopping experience to the US, letting shoppers save products from different retailers in one place, track price changes, find promotional codes, and check out without losing track of items scattered across multiple websites. The new feature, called Universal Cart, is rolling out across Google Search and the Gemini app as the company looks to make online shopping more convenient ahead of the holiday season.

Announced on October 15, 2026, Universal Cart builds on Google’s broader push to bring AI-powered shopping tools into its services. Rather than maintaining separate shopping lists, browser tabs, and screenshots, users can save products as they browse Google and return to them later from a central cart.

Google Universal Cart brings products from multiple stores together

Universal Cart works across Google’s shopping experiences, allowing users to collect products from different retailers in one place. For example, someone could save a handbag from Steve Madden through AI Mode in Google Search, add a sweater from Quince while using Gemini, and save another product from Ulta Beauty. Those items remain accessible through the same cart, making it easier to pick up where they left off.

The feature is designed to address a familiar problem with online shopping: finding a product is often easy, but keeping track of everything worth buying can quickly become messy. By connecting shopping activity across Search and Gemini, Google wants to make product discovery and purchase planning feel like one continuous experience.

Universal Cart also uses Google’s Shopping Graph, which contains more than 60 billion product listings that are continually refreshed. This data helps the feature monitor changes in product pricing and availability, sending notifications when a saved item becomes cheaper or returns to stock.

That could be particularly useful during major shopping events, when prices and inventory can change quickly and shoppers may be comparing several products before making a decision.

AI helps find discounts and choose payment methods

Universal Cart goes beyond simply storing products. Google says the feature can surface relevant promotional codes and help shoppers identify potential savings associated with their payment methods.

The payment assistance draws on Google Wallet, allowing the cart to take a user’s eligible card benefits into account when suggesting how to pay. For shoppers who use multiple credit cards with different rewards or offers, this could make it easier to identify which payment method offers the most value for a particular purchase.

These features fit into Google’s wider effort to make shopping assistance more proactive. Instead of requiring users to repeatedly check prices, search for discount codes, or remember which card offers which benefits, Universal Cart can help bring relevant information into the shopping process.

However, the cart is not a guarantee of the lowest available price or the best possible deal. Its usefulness will depend on the product information, available promotions, and payment benefits it can identify.

Checkout works through Google Pay or retailer websites

When users are ready to buy, Universal Cart supports two checkout paths, depending on the retailer.

For participating merchants, shoppers can complete purchases directly through Google’s interface using Google Pay and their saved payment methods. Google says these simplified checkout experiences are available with retailers including Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, and Wayfair, as well as many merchants using Shopify.

For other products, Universal Cart can transfer shoppers to the retailer’s website to finish the purchase. This means the feature can bring products together in one place without requiring every merchant to support the same checkout system.

Importantly, retailers remain the sellers of record. Customers receive purchase confirmations and customer support directly from the merchant, rather than Google becoming the seller of the products.

The checkout experience is powered by Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard designed to help shopping services, AI agents, and retailers work together across the purchasing process. Google introduced the protocol alongside its broader agentic commerce initiatives earlier in 2026.

Universal Cart is currently available in the US

Google is rolling out Universal Cart in the United States through Google Search and the Gemini app. The company first previewed the feature at Google I/O in May 2026, positioning it as a central hub for shopping across its services.

For now, the announced launch is limited to the US. Google has not confirmed a wider international rollout as part of this announcement.

The launch also marks another step in Google’s effort to connect product discovery, price monitoring, personalized shopping assistance, and checkout within its own ecosystem. Universal Cart does not replace individual retailer websites or eliminate every step of online shopping, but it could reduce the friction involved in managing purchases across multiple stores.

As the holiday shopping season approaches, the bigger question is whether shoppers will find it useful enough to make Google’s services their starting point for more purchases. If the feature can reliably track products, surface worthwhile savings, and simplify checkout, it could become a practical addition to Search and Gemini rather than just another shopping shortcut.
