Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, developed by xAI, is now free for all users of X (formerly Twitter). This change, introduced last week, allows users without X Premium subscriptions to access Grok’s conversational AI capabilities. Previously available only to paying subscribers, this move aligns Grok with competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, which offer free versions.

Usage limits

The free tier introduces restrictions to maintain accessibility and functionality:

  • Users can send up to 10 messages every two hours, including both chat and image-generation requests.
  • Grok can process up to three image analyses per day.
  • Text-to-image generation is powered by the FLUX 1 model.

Premium and Premium+ subscribers still retain enhanced privileges, such as higher daily query limits. This freemium model enables xAI to attract more users, gathering feedback to refine Grok’s capabilities while competing in the saturated chatbot market.

Grok distinguishes itself with its informal, humorous style, contrasting with the more formal tone of competitors like ChatGPT. Its ability to access real-time data makes it a versatile assistant for news, research, and even coding support. Since its August update, Grok also includes a text-to-image generation feature, though early users noted occasional oddities in its outputs.

This development follows xAI’s recent $6 billion funding round, which brings its total valuation to $12 billion. Reports also suggest that xAI is exploring a standalone app for Grok, similar to apps from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. The expanded access is expected to drive user engagement, positioning Grok as a strong player in the AI ecosystem.

For now, Grok is integrated directly into X, available via the left-hand menu on the desktop or the bottom navigation on mobile (or access directly here: x.com/i/grok). Whether you’re curious about its quirky humor or its advanced AI capabilities, the free version makes it easy to explore without a financial commitment.

If you’re looking to try Grok, this could be a perfect opportunity to see how it stacks up against industry giants like ChatGPT or Google Gemini.
