Apple’s September 9 event was not exactly short on announcements. The company came armed with new Apple Watch models, a major health and fitness push, new AirPods, the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, and—finally—the long-rumored foldable iPhone Duo.
It was also the first major September iPhone event under Apple CEO John Ternus, but Apple clearly wasn’t interested in making the leadership change the star of the show. Instead, the hardware did the talking.
And there was quite a lot of hardware to talk about.
Here’s everything Apple announced.
Apple Watch Series 12 arrives with a new Health Sensing System
Apple started with the Apple Watch Series 12, and the big theme was health.
The new watch introduces an all-new Health Sensing System built around new optical and electrical heart sensors and Apple’s S11 chip. Apple says the system delivers its most accurate heart-rate sensing in a wearable yet, with the watch measuring heart rate every five seconds throughout the day.
That higher-frequency sensing also feeds into a new readiness score, which looks at recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep to give users an idea of how prepared their body is for the day ahead.

Heart-rate variability gets a major upgrade too. Apple says HRV can now be measured as often as every five minutes, giving the watch considerably more data to work with when assessing recovery and stress.
The result is an Apple Watch that is becoming less of a watch that happens to track your health and more of a tiny health-monitoring computer that happens to tell time.
Series 12 also brings new finishes, including dark bronze, black, light gold, and space gray aluminum, along with radiant gold and natural titanium options. Apple is also bringing back ceramic, with pearl white and night blue finishes. Aluminum models get Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60 percent tougher than the previous Ion-X glass.
Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399 and becomes available September 18.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 gets even more serious about health
Then came the Apple Watch Ultra 4, because apparently the regular Apple Watch wasn’t rugged enough for people who consider walking to the mailbox an outdoor expedition.
Ultra 4 gets the same new Health Sensing System and S11 chip, bringing higher-frequency heart-rate and HRV measurements and the new readiness score to Apple’s most adventure-focused watch.

The bigger upgrade is battery life. Apple says Ultra 4 can track outdoor workouts for up to 45 hours, while also offering what it describes as the most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch.
The rugged titanium design remains, but Apple is clearly expanding the Ultra’s role beyond hiking, diving, and pretending your neighborhood trail is an expedition to Everest. It is now just as much about everyday health and recovery as it is about adventure.
Ultra 4 starts at $799, with availability beginning September 18.
Apple Intelligence comes to health and fitness
Apple also spent considerable time explaining what all that new health data is actually supposed to do.
The redesigned Health app for iPhone, arriving later this year, will use Apple Intelligence to turn health and fitness information into more understandable insights. Apple is adding a new Longevity section with a Health Age feature, alongside expanded views of health metrics and personalized recommendations.

The new Health Sensing System on Series 12 and Ultra 4 provides the raw material, while Apple Intelligence is increasingly being positioned as the interpreter.
In other words, Apple wants the watch to stop simply saying, “Here are 47 numbers you probably won’t look at,” and start saying, “Here’s what those numbers might actually mean.”
The updated system includes daytime and overnight vitals, recovery HRV, more frequent measurements, and the new readiness experience. Apple says its heart-rate accuracy was evaluated in a study involving more than 1,000 participants, where the new Apple Watch achieved the highest accuracy among the leading wearables tested.
The company is also adding Audio Intelligence features to Apple Watch, designed to help users remember important moments from conversations and recognize significant sounds. Apple says these features are being designed around privacy, security, and accessibility.
So yes, your Apple Watch is becoming increasingly interested in what your body is doing—and, apparently, what’s happening around you too.
AirPods 5 bring ANC to the regular AirPods line
After putting our wrists through a health-data marathon, Apple moved on to our ears.
AirPods 5 are the new standard AirPods, and Apple has given them one feature that previously made the Pro models considerably more attractive: Active Noise Cancellation.

Apple says AirPods 5 offer industry-leading ANC for an open-ear design and can remove up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. They also get a new multiport acoustic architecture, next-generation Adaptive EQ, improved Transparency mode, Siri AI support, and Live Translation.
The pricing is perhaps the most interesting part.
The standard AirPods 5 cost $129, and ANC is included. If you want the Wireless Charging Case, however, the price rises to $149.

So Apple has apparently decided that blocking out the world should be affordable, but charging the thing without plugging in a cable remains a premium lifestyle choice.
Both models are available September 18, with preorders starting September 9.

iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max bring a serious camera upgrade
Then Apple got to the iPhone.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are the new flagship models, powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip and built around major upgrades to cameras, performance, battery life, and Apple Intelligence.
The biggest camera change is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture.
That means Apple is finally giving the iPhone hardware-based aperture control, allowing the camera to adjust how much light enters the lens. Apple is pairing that with new Pro controls that give photographers more control directly inside the Camera app.
The phones also get a smaller Dynamic Island, a next-generation vapor chamber for sustained performance, and what Apple describes as major battery improvements.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max gets the biggest battery-life boost, with Apple calling it the largest increase in battery life ever delivered on an iPhone.
The new models come in black, silver, glacier, and a new burgundy finish. Preorders begin September 12, with both phones arriving September 18.
And yes, Apple is still making the Pro iPhone look like it belongs in a professional camera bag, except the camera bag is now your jeans pocket.
And then Apple finally unveiled the iPhone Duo
This is where the evening took a rather large fold.
After years of rumors, speculation, leaks, and enough foldable-iPhone discussion to fill several internet lifetimes, Apple finally introduced its first foldable iPhone: the iPhone Duo.

Opened up, the Duo has a 7.6-inch inner display, making it the largest display ever put on an iPhone. Closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer display that Apple says provides 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro.

And because Apple has apparently decided that every foldable needs a name that sounds like it belongs to a Microsoft product from 2020…
Meet the Surface Due-mini.
No, Microsoft did not suddenly bring back the Surface Duo.
It’s just the iPhone Duo, but once Apple puts “Duo” on a folding phone, the Surface Duo is going to haunt every headline whether Microsoft likes it or not.
Call it the Surface Due-mini. Apple’s version. Same joke, considerably more expensive.
The actual iPhone Duo is a very different device from Microsoft’s old two-screen experiment. Apple’s design uses a single folding inner display, with a precision hinge and a titanium construction. When opened, Apple says it is the thinnest iPhone ever.
The foldable is powered by the A20 Pro and uses a custom vapor chamber and dual-battery architecture to keep performance and battery life in check.
Apple is also reworking iOS 27 for the foldable form factor. Apps can take advantage of the larger screen, while the device can be positioned in different ways for viewing, multitasking, gaming, and other activities.
Apple is also leaning heavily into Apple Intelligence and Siri AI on the Duo, bringing the same broader AI capabilities found elsewhere in the new iPhone lineup.
The iPhone Duo comes in Star White and Night Sky, with a polished Grade 5 titanium frame. Preorders begin October 16, and the phone goes on sale October 23.

And yes, it is very Apple that the company waited until 2026 to enter the foldable-phone market, only to arrive with the confidence of someone who invented folding screens.
That’s the September 9 Apple event
So, that was the whole show.
Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 brought a much more advanced Health Sensing System, higher-frequency heart-rate and HRV tracking, and the new readiness experience. Apple Intelligence then gave the Health app a bigger role in interpreting all that information.
AirPods 5 brought Active Noise Cancellation to the regular AirPods family at $129, while the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max pushed camera control, performance, battery life, and AI further with the A20 Pro chip.
And finally, Apple did the thing everyone had been waiting years to see: it folded the iPhone.
The iPhone Duo is easily the biggest visual change in the iPhone lineup in years, while the rest of the announcements show Apple continuing to push health tracking, on-device intelligence, audio, cameras, and battery life across its existing products.
In other words, Apple’s September event was less about one giant upgrade and more about making the entire ecosystem a little more capable at once.
Although, let’s be honest: everyone is still going to be talking about the phone that folds.
