8BitDo has come a long way from its roots as a company primarily focused on nostalgia-infused Nintendo accessories. In recent years, they’ve branched out into a diverse array of gaming controllers and accessories, and now they’re diving into the world of mobile gaming. Enter the 8Bitdo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller, a sleek device that combines the best features of their acclaimed Ultimate series with an innovative design that attaches to your smartphone, much like popular offerings from Backbone and Razer Kishi.

However, before you get too excited, there’s some not-so-great news for Apple enthusiasts. This controller is exclusively designed for Android devices, leaving iPhone users out in the cold. Additionally, unlike Backbone’s plug-in design, the 8Bitdo controller connects via Bluetooth, which comes with a trade-off: it’s slightly bulkier, weighing in at 236 grams—a substantial 71% heavier than its Backbone counterpart. Despite its heft, 8Bitdo claims that the 350mAh battery can last up to 15 hours after just 1.5 hours of charging.

For those rocking Android devices, the controller promises versatility. It’s compatible with devices ranging from 100mm to 170mm in length, meaning it can even accommodate some small tablets—though, let’s be honest, few tablets are that compact these days. For instance, Amazon’s Fire HD 8 is around 32mm too wide to fit. Still, if you own an Android phone, this controller should comfortably fit in your gaming setup.

What sets the 8Bitdo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller apart is its cutting-edge technology. Featuring Hall effect triggers and joysticks, users won’t have to worry about pesky joystick drift, a common issue with many controllers. The layout includes the standard four action buttons, along with a unique “clicky,” “smooth,” and “tactile” D-Pad. There’s also a profile button and two paddle buttons located on the back for extra control. The sticks are designed with wear-resistant metal joystick rings, ensuring durability for long gaming sessions.

8Bitdo doesn’t stop at just hardware; the controller is also compatible with 8BitDo’s Ultimate Software. This software allows users to remap buttons, adjust stick and trigger sensitivity, and create or modify profiles, enhancing the gaming experience. The software is available for both Windows and Android, and if you’re on iOS, you can install it on Macs via the App Store.

If you’re interested in grabbing the 8Bitdo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller, it’s not available just yet, but you can pre-order it on Amazon for $49.99—that’s half the price of the Backbone One. The controller comes in sleek black and white designs and is set to hit shelves on November 29, 2024.
