When was the last time you went through your drawers and closets, purging outdated electronics and devices you no longer use? If you’re like many of us, the answer may be “too long ago.” Unused phones, tablets, e-readers and gaming consoles tend to pile up, cluttering our spaces while representing a growing environmental burden.
Amazon has a solution for this modern problem: the Amazon Trade-In program. With this initiative, customers can responsibly declutter by sending in their gently used electronics. Amazon then determines which items can be refurbished for resale, extending their lifespan, while devices that are too damaged or obsolete get properly recycled.
Here’s how the Amazon Trade-in program works
Customers start by visiting Amazon’s dedicated Trade-in page and entering details about the type of device and its condition. Amazon provides an initial quote representing the device’s trade-in value in the form of an Amazon gift card. The customer then prints a free shipping label and sends off the device.

Upon receiving the item, an Amazon inspection team provides a final trade-in value. The customer can either accept this amount loaded onto their Amazon account as a gift card balance or have the device returned for free. For select items, Amazon sweetens the deal by offering an additional discount of up to 20% on the purchase of a new qualifying Amazon device from the same product category.
The types of items accepted span major electronics categories including smartphones, tablets, e-readers, smart home devices like Echo and Ring, gaming consoles and accessories, Bluetooth speakers and headphones, and even wireless routers and streaming media players. As long as the device powers on and has no major damage like a cracked screen, there’s a good chance it qualifies for trade-in credit or can be refurbished and resold.
For devices that are too far gone, Amazon works with recyclers to ensure components get properly processed. Customers still earn credit in these cases, though no additional promotional discount applies.
In addition to the online process, customers can trade in eligible Amazon devices in person at select retail locations. A store associate evaluates the item’s condition and provides a trade-in quote on the spot.
For a planet increasingly awash in electronic waste, that’s an offer worth taking seriously.
