Spotify’s lossless audio dream could finally become a reality

After years of delays, Spotify's lossless audio streaming ambitions appear to be nearing reality, with leaked UI screenshots offering a glimpse into device compatibility, quality levels, and more.

For audiophiles and music enthusiasts alike, the promise of lossless audio on Spotify has been a tantalizing prospect, one that has remained frustratingly out of reach for years. However, recent leaks suggest that the streaming giant’s long-awaited foray into high-fidelity audio could finally be nearing its debut.

It was a seemingly innocuous Reddit post that ignited the speculation. User OhItsTom shared screenshots from Spotify’s version 1.2.36, revealing intriguing elements that hinted at the impending arrival of lossless audio streaming. The images depicted a device compatibility checker, designed to ensure users’ hardware and internet connections could handle the higher bitrates associated with lossless playback.

According to the leaked visuals, Spotify’s lossless offering could deliver audio quality of up to 1,411 kbps, a significant leap from the current 320 kbps ceiling. Another section mentioned the potential for even higher bitrates, reaching a staggering 2,117 kbps – a data-intensive feat that could consume a whopping 15.9MB per minute.

For true audiophiles, the prospect of 24-bit/44.1kHz playback via the lossless FLAC format is particularly enticing. While the leaks suggest this level of fidelity may be limited to select songs, the mere possibility has set enthusiasts’ hearts racing.

Spotify appears to be taking a prudent approach to the lossless rollout, with the leaked UI elements including a compatibility checker to ensure users’ devices, connection types, and bandwidth can handle the higher-quality streams. Advisory blurbs caution against using Bluetooth devices, which often struggle to deliver true lossless sound, and instead recommend wired connections or Spotify’s Connect feature for wireless playback.

The leaked screenshots also hint at a rebranding effort, with Spotify reportedly referring to the feature as “enhanced listening” internally and potentially marketing it as simply “Lossless” to consumers – a departure from the previously announced “HiFi” moniker.

Spotify’s journey towards lossless audio has been a protracted one, fraught with delays and broken promises. The feature was first announced back in February 2021, sparking excitement among the platform’s user base. However, as competitors like Amazon Music, Apple Music, and Tidal forged ahead with their high-resolution audio offerings, Spotify remained conspicuously silent.

While the company has periodically reassured users that lossless streaming is still in the works, the radio silence has tested the patience of many. At this juncture, audiophiles and music lovers alike are understandably skeptical, adopting a “believe it when we see it” stance.
