For movie buffs and sports fanatics with one of Sony‘s latest televisions, a new firmware update promises to elevate the streaming experience. The company announced plans to roll out a Prime Video calibrated mode to its 2024 TV lineup, providing viewers with an auto-optimized picture tailored specifically for Amazon‘s popular streaming service.

The forthcoming feature arrives as an expansion of Sony’s Netflix Calibrated Mode, which debuted in 2018. That original offering dynamically adjusts a television’s display settings to render the ideal picture quality for Netflix‘s content catalog. Now, Prime Video is next in line for similar visual enhancement.

More than just pretty pictures

However, Sony’s Prime Video calibrated mode promises more than just fine-tuned color and contrast. It will leverage AI and metadata embedded within Prime’s content stream to automatically configure the optimal viewing settings based on the specific title and format.

The calibrated mode will span Prime Video’s entire library, including offerings from the newly-acquired MGM catalog as well as live events. In total, Sony has developed eight unique calibration profiles to accustom both LCD and OLED displays. The platforms will further leverage built-in light sensors to finely tune the on-screen imagery based on a room’s lighting conditions.

Not surprisingly, Dolby Vision HDR titles will rely on the TV’s native Dolby processing rather than Prime’s calibrations. However, Sony ensures the auto-calibration will apply to both standard and high dynamic range videos across the Prime library.

Coming soon to Sony’s finest

The Prime Video calibrated mode will begin rolling out to Sony’s 2024 TV models this summer via automatic firmware updates. Consumers won’t need to activate or configure the new feature, as it will be enabled by default on supported displays.

Among the first beneficiaries will be Sony’s flagship BRAVIA XR A95L QD-OLED 4K HDR Google TV, boasting quantum dot enhancement and top-tier image processing. However, the streaming upgrade will eventually make its way to the full 2024 4K and 8K BRAVIA XR lineup in the months ahead.

For those already invested in Sony’s premium viewing experience, the arrival of Prime Video’s calibrated mode serves as another enticement to migrate streaming services to the big screen. With Netflix and now Prime employing dedicated TV optimization, the home theater may prove an increasingly appealing destination for the latest hit movies and must-see sports events.
