During the investors’ Q&A session, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed the company’s strategy to ensure a seamless transition for players from the Nintendo Switch to its upcoming console. Furukawa emphasized the importance of Nintendo Accounts in this process, signaling that they would play a central role in the company’s future plans.

While Nintendo Accounts were introduced with the Switch, Nintendo’s track record regarding online infrastructure has not always been stellar. Previous systems such as the Wii U and 3DS utilized the Nintendo Network ID, and while it is possible to connect these accounts to the current service, the transition process was far from smooth for many users.

However, with over 290 million Nintendo Accounts currently in use across both console and mobile platforms, the company has established a strong foundation to build upon its next-generation infrastructure. This strategic move aligns Nintendo with its competitors, Sony and Microsoft, who have successfully migrated users’ PlayStation Network and Xbox Live accounts across multiple hardware generations.
