LG’s new gram Pro 16 and 17 bring power, portability, and built-in AI

LG’s gram series has long been synonymous with featherweight portability, and the latest additions—the 16Z90TR and 17Z90TR—take that legacy even further while packing in serious horsepower and AI smarts. These two Pro variants blend the company’s ultra‑light DNA with Intel’s cutting‑edge Core Ultra 7 processors, NVIDIA’s RTX 5050 graphics, and a suite of on‑device and cloud‑based AI features designed for today’s multitasking creatives and mobile professionals.

Portability remains the headline act. The 16‑inch 16Z90TR tips the scales at just 3.0 pounds, while the 17‑inch 17Z90TR comes in at 3.3 pounds—making it one of the lightest 17‑inch laptops on the market—and measures a mere 0.6 inches thick. Despite their slim profiles, both models sport robust magnesium‑alloy chassis that feel sturdy under the fingers and withstand the rigors of daily travel.

Underneath the sleek exterior, LG offers a choice of Intel Core Ultra 9 (Series 2) or Ultra 7 (255H) CPUs, built on Intel’s “Arrow Lake” architecture for higher core counts and improved efficiency. These chips are paired with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5050, bringing hardware‑accelerated ray tracing and AI‑driven graphics boosts to creative applications and even light gaming. Both laptops ship with 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 2TB NVMe SSD storage, delivering snappy load times and ample headroom for large project files.

Both the 16‑ and 17‑inch models feature WQXGA (2560 × 1600) IPS displays with a 144Hz refresh rate and 99 percent DCI‑P3 coverage, striking a balance between color accuracy and smooth motion—ideal for video editing, design work, and even VR pre‑visualization. Touchscreen input is available on the 16‑inch version, which also converts into a 2‑in‑1 tablet and includes a magnetically attached stylus for on‑the‑go sketching or note taking.

LG claims up to 27 hours of video playback on a single charge—a figure that, if realized in real‑world use, would place the gram Pro among the endurance champions in the Windows‑laptop arena. Intel Evo certification further guarantees fast wake‑from‑sleep, rapid charging (up to 50 percent in 30 minutes), and Wi‑Fi 6E connectivity.

Perhaps the most intriguing upgrade is gram AI, LG’s hybrid approach that marries local AI inference with cloud‑based large‑language models.

  • gram chat On‑Device leverages the Core Ultra chips’ built‑in neural engines to power features like Time Travel, which lets you rewind and retrieve recently viewed content across apps.
  • gram chat Cloud taps GPT‑4o for more advanced tasks—summarization, brainstorming, even drafting emails. LG is offering one year of free access to Cloud features, after which it converts to a subscription model.

This dual‑mode AI promises low‑latency performance for quick tasks without internet access, while still offering the “big‑brain” capabilities of GPT‑4o when you’re online.

LG’s gram Link 2.0 has also been upgraded, enabling drag‑and‑drop file transfers between Windows, Android, and iOS devices, plus the ability to answer phone calls and texts directly on the laptop. Calendar and email widgets sync in real time, streamlining scheduling and communication for heavy‑duty road warriors.

While LG hasn’t released independent thermals data yet, early hands‑on reports suggest that Intel’s newer silicon runs cooler under sustained loads compared to last year’s Ultra‑powered gram. But the combination of efficient CPUs and discrete NVIDIA graphics hints at strong performance with manageable fan noise.

Compared to the 2024 gram Pro line, these new models offer:

  • Significantly more GPU muscle (RTX 5050 vs. RTX 4050)
  • Higher‑resolution, faster‑refresh panels (144Hz vs. 60–120Hz)
  • Advanced hybrid AI capabilities not seen in earlier gram

However, the premium specs come at a premium price: starting at $2,799.99 for the 16Z90TR and $2,549.99 for the 17Z90TR.

With ultra‑light builds, powerhouse internals, and a forward‑looking AI ecosystem, LG’s 2025 gram Pro models make a compelling case for users who refuse to compromise on either portability or performance. Whether you’re editing 8K video on the fly, juggling dozens of Chrome tabs, or simply want your laptop to feel like an extension of your brain, these new gram are worth a closer look.
