LG has taken a significant leap forward with its latest iteration of the gram and gram Pro laptops, introducing a suite of AI enhancements that promise to redefine user interaction with their devices. Announced just before CES 2025, these updates spotlight LG’s commitment to innovation in the ultra-light laptop market.

The star of the lineup is the 16-inch gram Pro, which is not only the first in the series to be branded as a “Copilot Plus PC” but also the inaugural model to integrate Intel‘s Lunar Lake Core Ultra V-Series processors. This processor choice suggests a focus on energy efficiency and performance, tailored for AI workloads. Alongside, the 17-inch gram Pro and the 16-inch gram Pro 2-in-1 employ Intel’s Arrow Lake Core Ultra H-Series chips, ensuring robust performance across different use cases.

Both the 16-inch and 17-inch gram Pro models boast high-resolution displays at 2,560 x 1,600, offering crisp visuals for professionals and creatives. Memory and storage options are equally impressive, with up to 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 2TB of high-speed Gen4 NVMe SSD. Graphics are handled by Intel Arc GPUs in the 16-inch models, while the 17-inch variant steps up with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX4050, catering to those needing more graphical power for tasks like video editing or gaming.

The heart of LG’s new offerings lies in its AI enhancements. “gram Chat On-Device” utilizes a compact language model from LG AI Research’s EXAONE, enabling users to perform tasks like revisiting recent web pages or documents without needing an internet connection. This feature, named Time Travel, is reminiscent of Microsoft’s Recall but is processed entirely on the device, addressing privacy and performance concerns.

On the cloud side, “gram Chat Cloud” leverages OpenAI‘s GPT-4o to provide detailed responses to queries by accessing vast online datasets. This service integrates with personal data like calendars and emails, offering a personalized experience but requires an internet connection and is free only for the first year.

The new gram laptops support LG’s gram Link 2.0, enhancing connectivity by allowing seamless document and file sharing between devices, including iOS and Android smartphones. This feature also supports answering phone calls directly from the laptop, adding convenience for users who juggle multiple devices.

For those looking for an entry into the gram ecosystem without breaking the bank, LG introduces the gram Book to the US market. Equipped with an Intel Core i5 processor and a 15.6-inch full HD display, it offers up to 1TB SSD and 16GB DDR4 memory, providing a balance of performance and portability at a more accessible price point.

LG’s approach with these updates shows a clear intent to lead in the integration of AI into everyday computing, offering both on-device and cloud-based solutions. However, the effectiveness and user reception of these AI features, particularly in comparison to competitors like Microsoft’s Copilot or Apple’s Intelligence suite, will be crucial to watch.

The success of these new features will hinge not just on their technical prowess but also on user privacy, data management, and how seamlessly they integrate into daily workflows. LG has laid down an ambitious roadmap, and 2025 will be telling in how well these innovations are adopted by users looking for that edge in mobility and efficiency.
