You’re out and about, your phone’s battery is teetering on the edge of death, and you’ve got no charger in sight. We’ve all been there, right? Well, HMD, the Finnish crew behind those nostalgic Nokia vibes, just dropped a game-changer at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona that might save your day. Say hello to the HMD Amped Buds—wireless earbuds with a charging case that doesn’t just keep your tunes going but can also give your phone a little juice when you’re in a pinch. Priced at €199 (roughly $206), these bad boys are hitting the market in April, though it’s still up in the air whether they’ll make it stateside.

So, what’s the big deal? The star of the show here is the case. It’s not your average earbud holder—it’s a slim, 14mm-thick slab packing a 1,600mAh battery that doubles as a mini power bank. Thanks to Qi2 wireless charging tech (think MagSafe’s cousin), you can slap this thing onto the back of a compatible phone—like HMD’s own Skyline or a recent iPhone—and watch it trickle some life back into your device. No Qi2 or MagSafe? No problem. It’ll still work with any phone that supports wireless charging, though it won’t snap on magnetically. And if wireless isn’t your thing, there’s a USB-C port for good old-fashioned wired charging.

Now, let’s talk numbers. HMD says this case can boost an iPhone 16 Pro’s battery by about 20% wirelessly or 24% wired. For their Skyline phone, it’s 13.8% wireless and 20.7% via cable. Sure, it’s not going to fully revive your phone—most modern smartphones have batteries way bigger than 1,600mAh—but in a clutch moment, that extra bit of power could mean the difference between making a call and being stranded. Plus, if you’re just using it for the earbuds, HMD claims you’ll get up to 95 hours of playback before the case needs a recharge. That’s nearly four days of non-stop music—pretty wild for something that fits in your pocket.

The earbuds themselves? They’re no slouch either. They’ve got a unique hinged design—think of it like a little robot arm that folds forward to fit your ear after popping out of the case with a satisfying spring-loaded click. Available in black, cyan, and pink (color-matched to the case, because style matters), they’re built with 10mm drivers for solid sound and come with both active noise cancellation (ANC) and environmental noise cancellation (ENC) to keep the outside world at bay. Whether you’re drowning out a noisy commute or making a call without background chaos, these buds have you covered. They also play nice with Google Fast Pair and multipoint connectivity, so you can hop between your phone and laptop without missing a beat. Battery-wise, you’re looking at 8 hours per charge with ANC off, or 4 hours with it on—decent, if not groundbreaking.

Here’s where it gets clever: HMD’s not reinventing the wheel, but they’re tweaking it in a way that just clicks. We’re already used to lugging earbud cases around—why not make them pull double duty? It’s not the first time someone’s tried this—Huawei once stuffed earbuds into a smartwatch, and some obscure brands have toyed with power bank cases—but HMD’s take feels polished and practical. The case weighs just 80 grams, is splash-resistant (IPX4 for the case, IP54 for the buds), and sports a sleek aluminum alloy finish. It’s less about replacing your beefy 10,000mAh power bank and more about that “oh crap” moment when your phone’s at 5% and you’ve got no outlet in sight.

This isn’t HMD’s only MWC flex. They also rolled out an FC Barcelona-branded phone (complete with player Easter eggs for the superfans) and a teen-focused Fusion X1 smartphone with Xplora, designed to keep kids safe online with parental controls. But the Amped Buds stole the spotlight for me. It’s a fresh twist in a crowded earbud market where everyone’s chasing better sound or longer battery life. HMD’s betting on convenience instead—something that could resonate with anyone who’s ever juggled too many chargers.

Will it catch on? Hard to say. At €199, it’s not cheap—premium buds like the AirPods Pro 2 or Sony WF-1000XM5 are in that ballpark, and they don’t moonlight as power banks. But if you’re the type who’s always on the go and hates being caught with a dead phone or dead earbuds, this might just be your next must-have.
