The Google Pixel 9a may have abandoned its iconic camera bar for an iPhone 16-like design.

Google‘s Pixel line has always been known for its distinctive design, particularly the iconic camera bar that has become a hallmark of the series. However, with the recent release of the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, the company has seemingly abandoned this signature aesthetic.

Now, leaked images of the upcoming Pixel 9a suggest that Google might be taking a more familiar approach, drawing inspiration from Apple‘s iPhone 16.

The Pixel 9a is expected to deviate significantly from its predecessors in terms of design. The camera bar, which has been a defining feature since the Pixel 6, is nowhere to be seen. Instead, the device adopts a pill-shaped camera module that bears a striking resemblance to the iPhone 16’s arrangement.

While the Pixel 9a’s design isn’t an exact replica of Apple’s flagship, the similarities are undeniable. The horizontally stacked cameras and the overall layout echo the iPhone 16’s aesthetic. This departure from Google’s usual design language is a surprising move, especially considering the Pixel line’s reputation for standing out from the crowd.

Beyond the design, the Pixel 9a is expected to offer similar specs to its predecessor, the Pixel 8a. This includes a 6.1-inch OLED display, a powerful Tensor G4 processor, and ample RAM and storage.

However, the Pixel 9a’s most significant update is likely to be its camera system. While the exact details remain unclear, we can expect improvements in low-light photography and computational features thanks to the Tensor G4 chip.

Google’s decision to adopt a more mainstream design for the Pixel 9a is a risky one. While it may help the device appeal to a wider audience, it also risks diluting the Pixel line’s unique identity.

Google Pixel 8a was released in May this year, and the Pixel 9a is expected to be released in May 2025 or possibly July.

Updated 10:04 am ET: We mistakenly wrote “vertically stacked cameras” for the Pixel 9a leaked render images. We’ve corrected and changed it to “horizontal.” We regret the error.
