Discord is joining the growing list of companies leveraging generative AI technology to enhance its features. The company recently announced the launch of a suite of AI-powered tools, including a ChatGPT-style chatbot, moderation tool upgrades, an open-source avatar remixer, and AI-powered conversation summaries.

These new features are made possible by the technology of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. OpenAI’s new API interface, called “Foundry,” allows companies to easily incorporate AI-powered generative text into their apps. Discord is not the first company to adopt OpenAI’s technology, with Snapchat and DuckDuckGo already having integrated the tools into their own platforms.

With OpenAI’s technology, Discord is upgrading its existing robot, Clyde, to allow it to engage in conversations, answer questions, and recommend playlists. Users will be able to interact with Clyde in any channel by typing “@Clyde” in a server, and the bot will also be able to start group chats.

Discord is also experimenting with using OpenAI’s technology to improve its AutoMod feature, which alerts moderators when server rules may have been violated. By considering the context of conversations, Discord hopes to reduce the burden of manual moderation.

Building on its history as a social generative AI space, Discord is open-sourcing its Avatar Remix feature, which enables users to visually alter each other’s avatars using Stable Diffusion-powered AI image synthesis. The Avatar Remix code is available on GitHub.

Discord is also introducing “Conversation Summaries,” which use LLMs like ChatGPT to automatically summarize text and bundle streams of messages into topics. This feature is currently being tested on a limited number of servers.

In addition to these new features, Discord is launching a collaborative whiteboard with a text-to-image generator and a $5 million fund to encourage developers to create AI tools on the platform. With over 30 million people using AI apps on Discord every month, the company hopes to continue the momentum of AI innovation on its platform.
