In a landmark decision for the WordPress ecosystem, WP Engine secured a preliminary injunction (PDF version) against Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, following a contentious legal battle. The case centers on allegations that Automattic and its CEO, Matt Mullenweg, engaged in actions harmful to WP Engine’s operations and reputation.

WP Engine accused Automattic of blocking its access to essential WordPress.org resources and interfering with its Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) plugin, a widely used tool among developers. In September 2024, Mullenweg publicly criticized WP Engine, alleging trademark misuse and inadequate contributions to the WordPress community. Shortly after, Automattic implemented measures that restricted WP Engine’s services and impacted its customer base.

U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín sided with WP Engine, asserting that Automattic’s actions likely constituted tortious interference and caused “irreparable harm.” The court noted that WP Engine’s reliance on WordPress.org was not an excuse for Automattic to engage in targeted actions disrupting the company’s business. The judge also emphasized that Automattic’s conduct could harm the broader WordPress community, given the ecosystem’s reliance on stability and fair competition.

Under the court’s order, Automattic must:

  • Restore WP Engine’s access to WordPress.org.
  • Relinquish control of the ACF plugin to its original management.
  • Cease displaying lists of companies associated with WP Engine and remove customer-affiliation verifications for WordPress.org users.

This decision highlights the tension between Automattic’s role as a steward of the open-source WordPress project and its position as a commercial entity with significant influence over the ecosystem.

WP Engine hailed the decision as a victory for fairness and stability in the WordPress community, emphasizing its commitment to collaboration within the ecosystem. Meanwhile, critics of Automattic argue that the company’s dual roles may lead to conflicts of interest, as seen in this case. The court’s ruling serves as a cautionary tale about balancing corporate interests with community trust in the open-source world.

This injunction marks a pivotal moment for WordPress stakeholders, setting a precedent for how disputes in the ecosystem might be handled moving forward.
