Apple’s rumored foldable surprise: a 20.3-inch MacBook for 2027?

Despite expectations of a foldable iPhone or iPad, the latest rumors suggest Apple's first foldable device could be a massive 20.3-inch MacBook set to unfold in 2027.

The foldable device race is heating up, with major tech giants like Samsung and Motorola already staking their claims in this burgeoning market. But if the latest rumors are to be believed, Apple’s entry into the foldable arena could come in an unexpected form – a foldable MacBook with a massive 20.3-inch display, slated for release in 2027.

The rumor mill has been abuzz with whispers of Apple‘s foldable ambitions for quite some time now. However, a recent post on X (formerly Twitter) by renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has added a fresh twist to the narrative. According to Kuo, rumors suggesting Apple might mass-produce a foldable iPhone or iPad by 2026 are inaccurate. Instead, he claims that the only foldable device on Apple’s development schedule is a 20.3-inch MacBook, expected to enter mass production in 2027.

Kuo’s revelation aligns with previous reports hinting at Apple’s plans for a foldable MacBook. However, in this case, the “foldable” aspect doesn’t refer to the traditional hinged design but rather to the display itself, which is rumored to fold in half.

Lending credence to Kuo’s assertions, another leaker known as “Revegnus” chimed in, suggesting that the foldable display’s size could actually be 20.25 inches. This figure closely matches a report from The Elec in 2022, which also predicted a 2027 release window for a foldable Apple device with a 20.25-inch display that could fold into a more compact 15.3-inch form factor.

According to these reports, the top half of the folded device would house the display, while the bottom half could potentially accommodate a software keyboard or other interactive elements.

While the 2027 release date seems to be a recurring theme in these rumors, the timeline for Apple’s foldable ambitions has been subject to constant shifts. For instance, a separate report from The Elec suggested that a foldable device from Apple could arrive as early as 2025, a prediction that was later echoed by renowned display analyst Ross Young.

Furthermore, another report indicated that Samsung had reorganized its operations to prioritize improving technology for Apple’s foldable device, further fueling speculation about the tech giant’s plans in this space.

It’s worth noting that Ming-Chi Kuo is known for using placeholder names when discussing future products, so the “20.3-inch foldable MacBook” moniker might not accurately reflect the final product’s branding or classification. In fact, if the device features an all-touch surface, it could potentially be categorized as an iPad rather than a traditional MacBook.

While these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, the sheer volume of reports surrounding Apple’s foldable endeavors suggests that the company is indeed exploring this technology. However, the exact form it will take and the timeline for its release remains shrouded in mystery.
