According to a report from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple is gearing up for a significant Mac-related product launch expected at the end of this month.
In his recent “Power On” newsletter, Gurman hinted that Apple is preparing to steal the spotlight with a Mac-focused product announcement, slated for the end of October. One of the key highlights of this launch could be the long-anticipated update to the 24-inch iMac, which has been due for a hardware refresh. The current 24-inch iMac, powered by the M1 chip, was introduced back in April 2021 and is the only current-generation Mac still using the M1 processor. Gurman has previously indicated that the next iMac would skip the M2 and adopt the more advanced M3 chip, although he refrained from specifying the exact chip details in his newsletter.
Gurman observed that Apple’s own retail stores are running low on stock for the 24-inch iMac, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. In some cases, customers may need to wait until mid-November for their desired configurations, which Gurman sees as a clear indicator of something big in the pipeline for these devices. He also hinted that Apple has made significant progress on the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. Despite the recent launch of the M2 Pro and M2 Max variants in January, Gurman suggests that an additional update later in the same year, while unusual, is not impossible.
Gurman’s predictions suggest that the forthcoming Mac announcement will likely happen on October 30 or October 31, with Apple’s earnings call following on November 2. However, he doesn’t anticipate any major design changes for the new Macs, apart from the expected processor upgrades. There’s also a possibility of minor enhancements to their displays.
In addition to these announcements, Gurman reiterated that the next-generation MacBook Air models featuring the M3 chip are not expected until early 2024. Furthermore, a larger “pro” version of the iMac, boasting a 32-inch display and a new design, is tentatively slated for late 2024 or 2025. Significant Mac redesigns are likely on the horizon, especially when Apple begins incorporating touchscreens into its lineup at some point in the future.
