Come May 7th, Apple is set to “Let Loose” with an unexpected event, just on the heels of their annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC). This standalone affair promises to put the spotlight firmly on iPads, including the revered iPad Pro and the often-overlooked iPad Air. The Apple Pencil is also slated for some long-awaited attention, as hinted by the event’s invite.

Rumors are ablaze with talk of a potential M4 announcement, which would mark a significant shift in Apple’s chip release pattern. The timing seems strategically aimed at countering Microsoft’s anticipated unveiling of their own ARM-based silicon at the upcoming Build conference. Speculations suggest Microsoft’s AI-centric chips might give Apple’s M3 chips a run for their money.

Considering Apple unveiled a trio of M3 chips just seven months ago, a swift replacement would indeed be surprising. However, supply chain woes last year likely threw a wrench in their original plans for a more staggered release schedule. Could this adjustment pave the way for additional M4 variants to debut at WWDC?

In the interim, whispers suggest that the latest chip might make its debut on an iPad first – specifically, the iPad Pro. This flagship device is ripe for a refresh, having last received an update with the M2 chip in late 2022. With Apple blurring the lines between iPad and Mac, prioritizing the tablet for new silicon could signal a shift in strategy.

But it’s not just the chip that’s getting an upgrade; reports hint at a long-awaited shift to OLED displays for the iPad Pro. Bloomberg notes that this upgrade couldn’t come at a better time, as the tablet market has seen better days.

Despite being a leader in the tablet realm, Apple faced challenges in 2023, with the overall market shrinking by 10%. With the Vision Pro’s lukewarm reception, a revamped iPad could inject some much-needed vigor into Apple’s tablet lineup.

In addition to the iPad Pro, whispers suggest a duo of new iPad Air models in 11- and 12.9-inch variants. While current rumors suggest they’ll pack an M2 chip, the possibility of an M4 debut could mean an additional performance boost for these accessible models.

The Apple Pencil, often overshadowed by its tablet counterparts, is poised for a makeover. Reports indicate new features like squeeze detection, haptic feedback, and interchangeable tips could be in the pipeline. Add Find My support into the mix, and you’ve got a compelling upgrade for this indispensable accessory.

But what about the Macs? With the M4 on the horizon, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to expect a stealthy refresh or two. However, Apple might be saving the big Mac reveals for WWDC in June.

The event kicks off bright and early at 7 am PT / 10 am ET. Stay tuned as Apple gears up to “Let Loose” with its latest innovations in the world of iPads and beyond.
