Apple’s new iPhone Duo was jailbroken within hours of release

The iPhone Duo's first jailbreak demonstration arrives just hours after Apple's new foldable went on sale.

Apple‘s first foldable iPhone has barely reached customers, but security researchers have already demonstrated a jailbreak on the device. The team at Calif reportedly jailbroke an iPhone Duo running iOS 27.1 on October 23, the same day the new device went on sale, marking a remarkably quick breakthrough for Apple’s latest smartphone.

As reported by MacRumors, Calif shared a demonstration showing the iPhone Duo’s Home Screen icons and widgets moving and bouncing around, alongside an anime character added to the display. The unusual visual modifications offered a glimpse of what becomes possible when researchers bypass Apple’s software restrictions.

The demonstration arrived just hours after the iPhone Duo‘s launch, although Calif has not released a jailbreak tool for the public.

Calif previously demonstrated an untethered iPhone jailbreak

The iPhone Duo demonstration follows Calif’s earlier work on the iPhone 18 Pro. The team shared videos of an untethered jailbreak running on an iPhone 18 Pro with iOS 27.0.1, demonstrating that root access remained available even after the device restarted.

An untethered jailbreak is particularly significant because it does not require users to repeat the jailbreak process after every reboot. It can provide persistent access to parts of the operating system that Apple normally restricts.

However, it is not yet clear whether the iPhone Duo demonstration uses the same exploit chain or offers the same reboot persistence as the earlier iPhone 18 Pro jailbreak. The latest demonstration establishes that Calif has achieved a jailbreak on the new foldable, but it does not reveal every technical detail behind the result.

Just in case it wasn’t clear: we popped the iPhone Duo on release day, adding a much needed feature, inspired by the php2shell hacker @lcfr_hax!

Don’t expect a public jailbreak tool just yet

Despite the rapid progress, iPhone Duo owners should not expect to download a jailbreak utility anytime soon. Calif has not publicly released its work, and security researcher Stefan Esser told German publication Heise that the team does not plan to provide a jailbreak tool for everyday users.

A proof of concept could still be published in the future, potentially giving other researchers more information about how the jailbreak works. However, there is no confirmed release date for such a demonstration or any public tool.

Esser also said the vulnerabilities behind Calif’s earlier iOS 27.0.1 jailbreak had either already been disclosed to Apple or were expected to be disclosed soon. According to the researcher, most of those vulnerabilities have been fixed in the upcoming iOS 27.2 update.

Interestingly, artificial intelligence also played a role in developing the earlier jailbreak. Esser confirmed that AI was used to help with the work but did not explain which tools were involved or precisely how they contributed. It remains unclear whether AI played a similar role in the iPhone Duo demonstration.

What the jailbreak means for iPhone Duo owners

Jailbreaking removes some of Apple’s built-in restrictions, potentially allowing deeper system customization, access to protected areas of iOS, and modifications that Apple does not normally permit. For enthusiasts, that freedom can be appealing, particularly on a new device with a distinctive design and software experience.

But a successful research demonstration does not automatically translate into a practical jailbreak for consumers. The exploit must be understood, packaged into a usable tool, and potentially adapted as Apple releases software updates.

For now, the iPhone Duo’s launch-day jailbreak is primarily a milestone for the security research community rather than an opportunity for ordinary owners to modify their phones. With iOS 27.2 approaching and most of the vulnerabilities used in Calif’s earlier work reportedly addressed in that update, Apple’s next software release could also affect the window available for similar research.

The speed of Calif’s achievement is nevertheless notable: Apple’s first foldable iPhone has only just arrived, and researchers are already probing the software beneath its new interface.
