Apple’s flagship iPhones nearly got more RAM

Supply shortages may have prevented Apple's biggest RAM upgrade yet.

“You were supposed to bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness!” That’s more or less how some Apple enthusiasts might be reacting after a new leak claimed Apple’s flagship iPhones almost shipped with 16GB of RAM—but didn’t.

According to a new report, Apple originally planned to equip the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and the new foldable iPhone Duo with 16GB of RAM before supply constraints forced the company to settle for 12GB.

The claim comes from the leaker known as Instant Digital, who says Apple intended to increase memory on its most premium iPhones but had to revise those plans because of ongoing shortages of high-capacity memory chips. If accurate, it means Apple was aiming for a much bigger leap in on-device AI capabilities than what ultimately shipped.

The report also lines up with what Apple actually released. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max both include 12GB of RAM, matching the previous generation instead of offering the anticipated upgrade. While Apple hasn’t officially disclosed RAM specifications, the figures were confirmed through Xcode shortly after launch. The iPhone Duo is also expected to feature 12GB since it shares the same A20 Pro chip.

Why 16GB would have mattered

RAM has become increasingly important as Apple Intelligence expands. Modern AI features rely on large language models that need more memory to keep more data available for faster, more capable on-device processing.

An increase from 12GB to 16GB would have represented roughly a 33% boost in available memory. That extra headroom could have helped Apple support larger local AI models, improve multitasking, and potentially extend the useful lifespan of the devices as Apple Intelligence grows more demanding over the next several years.

Instead, the iPhone 18 Pro family remains at the same RAM capacity introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro generation.

Supply issues appear to be the culprit

The rumored cancellation doesn’t appear to have been a design decision.

Instead, the report points to continued industry-wide shortages of memory chips, making higher-capacity RAM more difficult and expensive to secure in sufficient quantities. Apple has already faced component cost increases across several product categories, so maintaining 12GB may have been the more practical choice for large-scale production.

That doesn’t necessarily mean 16GB is off the table forever. If memory supply improves, future Pro iPhones—or a later generation of Apple’s foldable lineup—could still make the jump.

Should buyers be disappointed?

Probably not—at least not immediately.

Twelve gigabytes is still a generous amount of RAM for a smartphone, and it’s enough to power Apple’s current suite of Apple Intelligence features. Most users are unlikely to notice any performance limitations today.

However, the news does suggest Apple had bigger ambitions for its 2026 flagship phones. For buyers hoping for the most future-proof hardware possible—especially on devices costing well over $1,000—the missing 4GB may feel like a missed opportunity rather than a deal-breaker.
