Wi-Fi 7: what you need to know about the super-fast wireless standard

Remember when Wi-Fi felt fast? When streaming a movie or downloading a big file didn’t take forever? Well, get ready for Wi-Fi on steroids because the next generation, called Wi-Fi 7, promises unimaginable wireless speeds up to a blistering fast 5.8 Gbps.

The Wi-Fi Standards Evolution (Intel Infographic / Image: Intel)

Wi-Fi 7 achieves these warp speeds through several innovative technologies working together:

  • Bigger Channels — Wi-Fi 7 doubles the maximum channel bandwidth allowing more data to be packed in and transmitted simultaneously.
  • Denser Data Encoding — Wi-Fi 7 leverages advances in modulation technology to cram even more data into wireless signals. Signals can now carry 120% more data than prior standards.
  • Multi-band Bonding — Device connections are intelligently spread across different frequency bands and combined for faster speeds and greater reliability. If one band experiences interference, your device seamlessly switches to another mid-connection without skipping a beat.
  • Reduced Latency — The multi-band capability also minimizes delays allowing applications like online gaming and HD video calls to function smoothly without lag or interruptions.
  • More Simultaneous Connections — Wi-Fi 7 supports communicating with more devices at once, which improves network efficiency and reduces congestion in environments with many connected devices.
  • Better Sharing — The available wireless capacity can be divided more dynamically between devices based on need instead of dedicating whole channels to single connections.

What does this mean in practical terms? Buttery smooth 8K video streaming. Lightning fast downloads of huge files. Near real-time virtual reality gaming. And improved performance of smart home and Internet of Things devices. Wi-Fi 7 can better handle families with dozens of connected devices streaming, gaming, video calling and more simultaneously. For businesses, it means seamless video conferences, efficient cloud access, and support for rooms full of devices without congestion.

Should I buy a Wi-Fi 7 router now?

The advancements do come with some caveats. Maximum speeds require all brand new Wi-Fi 7 compatible devices. While Wi-Fi 7 routers can still connect to older devices, their connections won’t see full performance gains. Range may also be limited initially, especially at the higher 6 GHz frequencies until FCC approves higher transmit power levels.

Although devices certified for Wi-Fi 7 are just starting to be released, routers have been shipping preemptively for some time. However, these routers are not yet affordable, with flagship models selling for up to $2300 or more. For most consumers, Wi-Fi 6E routers still provide excellent performance at more reasonable prices. However, over the next few years, as more phones, laptops, TVs, and appliances adopt the Wi-Fi 7 standard, high-speed multi-gigabit wireless connections will become the new norm.
