Cross-finger iPhone fans! Especially those of you who love a great camera but prefer a phone that fits easily in your pocket. Leaks suggest the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro, launching this September, is getting a major camera upgrade. We’re talking about the same powerful 5x zoom camera that was only available on the bigger iPhone 15 Pro Max.

However, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, this is just the first step in a super exciting line-up of camera improvements coming to iPhones in the future.

This year, the iPhone 16 Pro is basically catching up to the Pro Max by finally offering that sweet 5x zoom camera in the smaller size. This is great news for people who want a top-notch camera but don’t want a huge phone. But here’s the even cooler part: Kuo says Apple has even crazier camera tech in the works, all the way up to the iPhone 19 expected in 2027!

While the iPhone 16 Pro is a step towards evening things out between the Pro models, it seems Apple might start rolling out some brand new camera features on the bigger Pro Max first, before bringing them to the regular Pro version.

The iPhone 17 Pro is rumored to boast a whole new 48-megapixel camera with a bigger sensor. This means it’ll capture way more light, taking sharper pics with less graininess, especially in those dim-lit situations. Plus, the megapixel jump from 12 to 48 basically means you’ll get crazy detailed photos and way better zooming in on stuff.

On top of that, this new camera system might let Apple offer 8K video recording with that sweet 5x zoom – something competitor Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra already has. We’re not sure yet if this 48-megapixel camera will be on both iPhone 17 Pro models or just the bigger one, but Kuo says it’ll be standard on both the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max in 2026.

The camera game is about to get seriously intense with the iPhone 19 Pro lineup in 2027. Kuo predicts a crazy leap in zoom capabilities. We’re talking brand new designs for the bits inside the camera that bounce light around to zoom in further. But trickier designs can also mean some downsides like blurry pictures or less light getting in, so Apple will have to figure out how to fix those issues.

An improved long-range zoom on the iPhone would be a direct challenge to Samsung, which kind of took a step back with their latest phone by reducing the zoom from 10x to 5x. It’s worth noting that the iPhone 15 Pro Max already beats Samsung’s flagship in low-light situations, according to camera experts. Samsung might still be ahead in bright light, but if Apple goes beyond 5x zoom, they could become the king of smartphone cameras!

So, basically, the future is looking bright for iPhone cameras! The iPhone 16 Pro is just the beginning of a bunch of awesome upgrades that promise to take phone photography to a whole new level. It seems Apple is determined to catch up (and maybe even surpass) the competition when it comes to camera tech.
